New gels could protect buildings during wildfires
Wildfire NOTD subscriber Eric Appel, an Associate Professor of Materials Science and Engineering in Stanford University's School of Engineering, published a study in the journal Advanced Materials which shows that a new silica aerogel they have developed continues to protect treated materials from a wildfire after all the water inside the gel has evaporated, making it significantly more effective than existing commercial gels, which typically lose their effectiveness when they dry out.
