A wildfire that burned near the Southern California desert town of Palmdale scorched 120 acres before being contained (1); while firefighters in San Diego County snuffed a small wildfire in Deer Springs (2); but a 2,000 acre blaze near Lakeside forced residents to evacuate (3). CAL FIRE reported a wildfire on the fringe of the Los Padres National Forest in San Luis Obispo County which had burned 300 acres and was still growing (4); and they battled a small blaze in Southern Monterey County yesterday (5). A summary of wildfires burning in Oregon is provided by the next article (6); where firefighters advanced on the Lower Deschutes River Complex fires, which have burned 5,700 acres so far (7); but a wildfire near Mount Hood has forced the evacuation of an ill-starred resort that's had more than its share of bad luck (8); and a new wildfire has been reported near Maupin (9). A wildfire burning near Stanley, Idaho, forced the evacuation of a Boy Scout camp (12); but the Boise-based National Interagency Fire Center, which had predicted a bad fire season in the western US, has revised that estimate downward, giving US Forest Service time to evaluate new air-tanker contenders to replace its aging fleet, including the IL-76 (13). A wildfire burning north of Columbus, Montana, was still out of control Saturday afternoon (14). Firefighters in Arkansas are making progress on wildfires that have charred 1,749 acres since August 1st (15); while firefighters in Massachusetts had a busy time battling a number of wildfires (16). Firefighters in New Jersey battled a three-acre blaze on Windbeam Mountain (17). The good news is that 17,000 acres of New Jersey woodlands which burned after an F-16 flare ignited it in 2007 has grown back, but the bad news is that the forest has grown back! Wildfires in British Columbia have burned a record 1,055 mi.² of territory, approximately 300% more than is normal, and the fire season still has several weeks left in it (20); where heavy forest fire activity has sent smoke drifting as far as northern Ontario province (21); but even though cooler weather is coming, it's probably not enough to snuff wildfires across the province (22); however, it's already helping to clear the skies across western Canada of wildfire smoke (23).
