WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 031213

A blogger comments on the reversal of US Forest Service's policy to fight every fire, which was established in 2012 (1); while the issue of protecting wood utility poles from wildfires is tackled by the next article (2). Wildfire NOTD subscriber Rick Halsey, Director of the California Chaparral Institute, sent along an editorial from the Los Angeles Times that speaks out against CAL FIRE's draft environmental impact report, which some say is seriously flawed and "a very poor use of public funds" (3); and Oregon-based Erickson Air-Crane, which provides heavy Type III heli-tankers to fight wildfires in many parts of the world, reported a fourth quarter loss on earnings (4). The importance of wild horses grazing on potential wildfire fuel in Silver Springs, Nevada, is the focus of a letter to the editor (5); while US Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell will be visiting Colorado Springs in May to view the watershed damage done by the Waldo Canyon Fire in 2012 (6). The impact of a 65,000-acre wildfire west of Big Piney, Wyoming, last summer, on federal grazing lessees is explored by the next article (7); fire crews in Hermosa, South Dakota, pouncing on a half-acre wildfire Monday (8). Kentucky Division of Forestry fire crews battled a wildfire that threatened homes in Forest Hills yesterday afternoon (9); and Virginia Department of Forestry investigators have determined that two wildfires which burned over 500 acres between them in Scott County over the weekend were caused by arson (10). Firefighters in North Carolina estimated that a 535-acre wildfire in the Croatan National Forest would be fully contained today (11); while a 1,918-acre wildfire in Florida's Ocala National Forest has finally been contained (12). The problem of controlling backyard burns on the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad & Tobago is addressed by the next article (13); the International Association of Wildland Fire sending along a notice that the date to submit abstracts for the upcoming 4th Fire Behavior and Fuels Conference to be held in St. Petersburg, Russia, in July has been extended (14). A 60-hectare wildfire in Hubei Province, China, was being investigated by police (15). Heading to Australia, fire crews roped in a 144-hectare bushfire burning on the outskirts of Portland, Victoria (16); while folks in Anglesea would like to see a trio of bushfire sirens deployed around town, but the state government has yet to act (17). As Country Fire Service crews battle a 25-hectare bushfire outside of Adelaide, South Australia, a cool change in the weather is coming (18); air-tankers being called in to battle the blaze (19). In a follow-up to an article last week about a Tasmanian tree-sitter being forced from her perch by a bushfire, it appears that the fire itself was deliberately set (20); while recovery efforts near Dunalley reached a milestone with cleanup of the 100th property hit by last month's bushfires (21). And finally, a firefighters in Oconee County, South Carolina, found an unusual package along the side of the road: three month-old bear cubs!
