WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 083112

In a sign that Southern California's Santa Ana wildfire season is nearly upon us, two CL-415 Super Scoopers and an Erickson Air-Crane have landed at Van Nuys Airport (1); and they may be arriving none too soon, with over 30 wildfires reported in Simi Valley yesterday (2); a summary of wildfire activity in Northern California being provided by the next article (3); where S-2T tankers from CAL FIRE's Ukiah Air Attack Base are pounding a wildfire in Mendocino National Forest (4); but another Op-Ed piece, this one from San Francisco, faults government policies for mega fire destruction (5). With ideal fire weather conditions forecast, fire crews in Western Washington state fear they may not have enough personnel to handle blazes that break out over the Labor Day weekend (6); while the next article takes a look at the Washington Forest Health Program, which aims to improve forest health in that state (7). As rehabilitation efforts wrap up on parts of New Mexico's Gila National Forest scorched in the Whitewater-Baldy Fire, some roads are being reopened (8); and a 130-acre wildfire burning in Larimer County, Colorado, is 75% contained (9). The wildfire situation in Montana is summarized by the next article (10); where the 4,000-acre 19 Mile Fire is now 2% contained (11); meanwhile, air-tankers flying out of Glacier Park International Airport have been pounding a 10-acre wildfire burning in the Bob Marshall Wilderness (12); two dozen wildfires burning across the state forcing alterations of some families' Labor Day getaway plans (13); and imposing restrictions on visitors to the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest as well (14); but the plight of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation is explored by the next article (15). Wildfires have churned through an estimated 68,000 acres in the Nebraska Panhandle (16); but FEMA has approved emergency funds to help with suppression efforts of wildfires burning in the Nebraska National Forest (17); where a local radio station put out the call for food, water, and supplies for firefighters on the fireline, and volunteers responded! (18) A 20-person strike team from New York state's Department of Environmental Conservation has returned home after fighting wildfires in Montana (19). As Southern Europe continued to bake, wildfires were reported in Italy, Greece, Macedonia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Albania, and Turkey (20); where 4,000 people were evacuated from southern Spain's picturesque Costa del Sol region due to wildfire activity which injured two and killed one person (21); and, after weeks of wildfires, Bosnia's Deputy Security Minister is asking for international assistance to bolster their firelines (22). In Australia, the Supreme Court of Victoria's website will be streaming video from the Black Saturday class-action lawsuit being filed against electricity utility SP AusNet (23); but in the wake of an announcement that the utility would be allowed to charge ratepayers for its losses caused by such lawsuits, one lawyer pointed out alternative means of recovering the money (24). The bushfire season is starting a month early in Warrumbungle and Gilgandra, New South Wales (25); and following nearly a dozen wildfires since the beginning of July, Forests New South Wales fears that the summer fire season could be as bad as 2009's (26); while storm debris could produce a similar situation in Queensland (27); heavy fuels making for a difficult fight outside of Dalveen (28). And finally, firefighters in Cumbria, UK, used to getting cats out of trees, had something a little larger to tackle this time!
