WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 030511

Arizona's Coronado National Forest is beginning a vegetation thinning project which will cover 120 acres over the next few years to reduce the wildfire danger to that ecosystem (1); while Wildfire NOTD subscriber Dan Ware, Fire Information Officer for New Mexico State Forestry, is among those commenting on projections of a busy fire season in southern New Mexico, southeastern Arizona and southwest Texas (2). Texas Forest Service, assisted by firefighters from Arizona, Colorado, North Carolina and Mexico, continued to battle a 2,750-acre wildfire burning in Brewster County (3); but the folks in Floyd County plan a cookout tomorrow to help neighboring Motley County with their suppression costs for the Matador Fire (4); and there was one bit of good news for survivors of recent wildfires outside of Amarillo: the mayor will let them dump wildfire debris for free!
