WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 042913

Our first article today revisits the fact that approximately 50% of US air-tanker requests by firefighters on the ground went unfulfilled in 2012 as reported by the National Interagency Fire Center, with Colorado US Sen. Mark Udall stating that he would "be on the doorstep of the Secretary of Agriculture" if more air-tanker contracts aren't issued this year (1). CAL FIRE is rescinding permission for open burns allowed under the Dooryard Burn Permits in Santa Maria, California, for the remainder of fire season (2); the virtues of forest thinning being examined in the next article (3). A former biologist with Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in Washington state discusses the Northwest Forest Plan (4); while fire crews in Arizona are closing containment on a 161-acre wildfire that broke out Sunday in Santa Cruz County (5). Colorado's fire season may have been completely turned around by a series of late-season winter storms that dropped over 4 feet of snow in the Rockies (6); but helicopter crews drilled with firefighters on the ground outside of Austin, Texas, to prepare for wildfire season (7). Fire crews outside of Livingston, Montana, expect to have a 300-acre wildfire under control today (8); while a pair of wildfires kept firefighters in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, busy Sunday (9). Following an out-of-control test fire over the weekend, Maine Forest Service warned of the extreme fire danger due to dry conditions (10); the danger underscored by a seven-acre blaze near Bradford (11). Rising temperatures and increasing wind speeds spawned several wildfires across Massachusetts over the weekend (12); including a 21-acre blaze in Freetown/Fall River State Forest (13). A 40-acre wildfire outside of Canterbury, Connecticut, is being blamed on a campfire (14); but wetter, cooler weather along Florida's Treasure Coast should give firefighters a break for the next few days (15). A small wildfire was reported on Alaska's Kodiak Island near Womens Bay over the weekend (16). More than 200 personnel manned the firelines as a wildfire raced across Saskatchewan, Canada's, Grasslands National Park (17); and after 41 wildfires were reported by Québec's Société De Protection Des Forêts Contre Le Feu, warm weather sparked two new ones over the weekend (18). Numerous wildfires were reported in the Central European nations of Serbia and Kosovo (19); while unseasonably hot weather and high winds led to a number of blazes across Israel as well (20). A pair of helicopters were among the apparatus responding to a bushfire outside of Waihola, New Zealand (21). Leaked documents show that the government of Victoria, Australia, plans $40 million in cuts to Country Fire Authority's budget (22); while a drunken driver who breached police roadblocks during a bushfire in Dereel earlier this year had his day in court (23). Interest-free loans of up to $500,000 are being offered to businesses in Tasmania impacted by the January bushfires (24); even as volunteers are helping the region recover from the damage wrought by those blazes (25). And finally, if you're a fire marshal and think about letting your kids play games on your cell phone, think again!
