WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 042412

A 15-acre wildfire was sparked by lightning in Arizona's Coronado National Forest Monday (1); and a pair of wildfires have burned 140 acres northeast of Tucson (2); while a 10-acre wildfire was reported in Grant County, New Mexico (3). As expected, Colorado State Forest Service will no longer report to academics at Colorado State University, but will report instead to the Department of Public Safety (4); in the meantime, the US Air Force Reserve's 302nd Airlift Wing practiced their aerial firefighting skills over Colorado Springs in preparation for more wildfires (5). Dry, gusty conditions across Michigan prompted National Weather Service to issue an elevated wildfire danger warning (7); and National Weather Service warned of elevated wildfire danger for northwest Alabama into early evening (8). A wildfire which burned 741-acres in Pennsylvania's French Creek State Park is officially out (9); while Maine Forest Service reported that an arsonist who set three small wildfires has been taken into custody (10). Homeowners will get important tips on making their communities "Firewise" through a live blogging session in Brockton, Massachusetts, Wednesday (11). Although recent rains dampened the wildfire danger in the state, New Jersey Forest Fire Service, which has fought 500 fires in the last six weeks, is still wary of what the future holds (12); Rutgers University assisting them in their battle against wildfires with the New Jersey Fire Tower Atlas (13). South Carolina Forestry Commission is concerned that much of the fuel which burned off in a 1,900-acre wildfire in Horry County in 2009 may be set for round two due to extensive regrowth (14). After 1,500 fires have burned 58,000 acres statewide since the first of the year, Florida is bracing for more (15); where a voluntary burn ban is back in place in Marion County despite weekend rainstorms (16); and with 39,000 acres still on fire, the Agriculture Commissioner warned residents of that state of the continued wildfire danger (17). Hundreds of firefighters battled an 8,137-acre wildfire burning in Mexico, according to Jalisco's State Commission of Forest Fire Fighting and Prevention (18). The Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural Resources advised residents of Cebu Island that it was wiser to prevent wildfires rather than fight them after two broke out in the Buhisan Watershed Forest Reserve (19); while special compensation will be provided to families who suffered losses in a recent wildfire in Kaladisa, India (20). In Victoria, Australia, Melbourne University has launched a five-year study on the mental health impact of bushfires on individuals and communities (21); but Fire and Emergency Services Authority plans over three dozen controlled burns in the Kimberley region of Western Australia (22); even as an inquiry into an ultramarathon in which six runners were injured due to a bushfire across the course in that region continues (23). And finally, our last story takes a look at a threat to firefighters from an unexpected quarter: nanotechnology!
