The International Association of Wildland Fire, sent along an invitation to a webinar they will be conducting 11/20 which will discuss the USFS Mobile Technology Integration for Fire & Aviation Management (MTIFAM) Program (1). An eight-acre wildfire that was reported in the Angeles National Forest just north of the Southern California community of Azusa yesterday is now 90% contained (2); the blaze drawing the attention of the CL-415's stationed at Van Nuys Airport (3); but some are concerned that US Forest Service is not maintaining the Brown Mountain fire road, an important wildfire evacuation route used during the Station Fire (4); and an infestation of gold-spotted oak borer beetles in the Riverside County mountain community of Idyllwild will substantially increase the fire danger as trees are killed by the pest (5); while fire crews brought a 100-acre wildfire burning in San Luis Obispo County's Montaña de Oro State Park to 75% containment (6); even as US Forest Service conducted controlled burns near Tahoe City as part of the Lake Tahoe Basin Multi-jurisdictional Fuel Reduction Plan (7). The Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington, published a new study in Environmental Science & Technology which shows that smoke particles from forest fires traveled farther than ever believed before (8); and in New Mexico, the Little Bear Forest Reform Coalition will be discussing the benefits of basing a single-engine air tanker at Ruidoso's Sierra Blanca Regional Airport at a meeting next week (9). A researcher from the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research discusses the impact of climate change on Colorado's forests in the next item (10); while school kids are doing their part to help brighten the holidays for High Park Fire survivors (11). The Red Cross has received a $237,000 donation to assist wildfire survivors in Creek County, Oklahoma, where a wildfire burned 58,000 acres and destroyed hundreds of homes this summer (12). Following a six-week investigation into the crash of a military C-130 air-tanker in South Dakota, a microburst is being blamed for the catastrophe (13); but a new North Carolina Forest Service ranger received a baptism of fire when a 150-acre blaze broke out in Watauga County during his first two weeks on the job (14). The Canadian federal government has denied $1 million in wildfire prevention funds to FireSmart Canada (15). The impact of bushfires on children in Victoria, Australia, is the focus of the next article (16); but the folks in Benambra are inviting Country Fire Authority volunteers to a shindig that honors them for their efforts during a bushfire which threatened the town (17). A fireworks demonstration sparked a bushfire along Queensland's Sunshine Coast (18); while the Nature Conservation Council of New South Wales is on the hunt for a bushfire program officer (19). Fire crews in Western Australia were keeping a close eye on a bushfire burning near the City of Swan (20); while survivors of the Margaret River bushfire will have the $190,000 limit on compensation lifted by the state government (21); this at a time when Western Australia is facing a very bad bushfire season (22). And finally, a NASA supercomputer provides a striking image of the Earth, with green plumes showing forest fire activity worldwide!
