WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 061212

A 137-acre wildfire burning in Kern County, California, is nearly contained (1); while Wildfire NOTD subscriber Max Moritz, a fire researcher at UC Berkeley's Center For Fire Research and Outreach, was lead author in a new study that shows how climate change will increase wildfire activity across the western US over the next 30 years (2); and the San Francisco Bay area is getting ready for wildfire season (3); the danger underscored by a wildfire in Brisbane (4); while the Humboldt County Fire Safe Council and the Humboldt County Fire Chiefs Association have set up a series of meetings to discuss wildfire preparedness (5). Two homes were damaged by a wildfire set by a teenager in Selah, Washington, Monday (6). The DC-10 will begin airstrikes against wildfires across the West from Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport, having arrived there Monday night (7); firefighters having quelled a wildfire outside of Fort Mohave (8); and firefighters continued to grapple with a 3,157-acre wildfire burning in the Tonto National Forest (9). The next article takes a lookout's perspective on the 300,000-acre wildfire burning in New Mexico's Gila National Forest (10); followed by a brief update on the wildfires burning in New Mexico and Colorado (11); and a US Senator from Colorado is taking the opportunity to urge reauthorization of the Stewardship Contracting Projects and the acquisition of more large air-tankers (12); while firefighters and apparatus from around the state are flooding into Larimer County to help with the fight (13); the Red Cross providing aid to people hard-hit by wildfires (14); while evacuees await word on when they can return home (15); and not just people, either (16); but the posh cabin of a Quad Cities restaurateur was reduced to ashes (17). Firefighters continued to gain the upper hand on several wildfires burning in Utah (18); and as wildfires continue to rage in the West, firefighters in Missouri are preparing to join the fray (19). The next article looks at how Virginia Department of Forestry's work with fire allows forests to thrive (20); while rainfall in Volusia and Flagler Counties, Florida, has dampened the wildfire risk there (21). There was trouble in Paradise, as two small wildfires were reported on the Hawaiian island of Molokai (22); and the next article provides a snapshot of wildfire activity in Ontario, Canada (23). The International Association of Wildland Fire, sent along an announcement about their upcoming symposium on the economic impact of wildfires, which will take place in Mexico City in November (24). Over 2,000 personnel are on the fireline in Shanxi Province, China, to battle a wildfire outside of Jinzhong City (25); while a wind-driven wildfire is racing through Athithundu Forest in southern India's Tamil Nadu state (26). Heading to Australia, a reduction in bushfire safety warnings to residents of Mitchell Shire, Victoria, is a hopeful sign that bushfire education is having an impact (27); and property owners in Queensland are being advised to begin bushfire preparations (28); while the New South Wales state government has allocated $71 million to help with a variety of projects, including bushfires (29). And finally, the darker side of plants is revealed by a horticulturist who discusses how some plants incinerate their competition during forest fires!
