WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 111308

First up in the news today, two small blazes, one in Ramona and one in San Diego's South Bay cropped up today, but they were nothing compared to the conflagration Cox Communications and SDG&E may have to face from the PUC, as the next two articles show. Help is on the way to San Diego as Cal Fire Strike Teams from Fresno roll south in anticipation of trouble over the next few days. Rick Hatton got to show off his pride and joy this week at Southern California Logistics Airport up in Victorville, while a new study explains how much real estate could be threatened from the effects of climate change - $2.5 TRILLION worth! While Southern California is bracing for more Santa Anas, Central California is informing the public on controlled burns in their area and folks in Utah are getting involved in restoration projects. Firefighters in South Africa had their hands full with a veldt fire. The debate about the effects of man on the ecosystem in Australia from the standpoint of fire is discussed in the next article, followed by one that reminds people living in bushfire country to take some simple precautions to protect their homes. You may have heard of drought-resistant plants and bug-resistant plants, but have you ever heard of smoke-resistant plants? As bushfires increase, Australian researchers are on a quest to breed some (something that might also be of interest to vintners in Central California, after their bitter harvest following this year's wildfires up there). And finally, for you avid boaters, the next time pirates try to board, just make sure you have some firefighting foam along to ward them off!
