WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 102612

Wildfire NOTD subscriber Chuck Bushey, Past President of the International Association of Wildland Fire, sent along a link to the latest issue of the International Journal of Wildland Fire (1). As Santa Ana winds increased fire danger in Southern California, a segment from KPCC discusses how to prepare for wildfire evacuations (2); while a wildfire in Santa Clarita Valley, north of Los Angeles, briefly threatened structures (3); and US Forest Service plans to begin thinning operations in the Inyo National Forest in 2014 (4); while Lassen National Forest is beginning a series of controlled burns to reduce fuel in the area (5); but a tour of the Chips Fire burn area has been postponed due to inclement weather (6); those same conditions allowing US Forest Service to lift restrictions on fires in the Stanislaus National Forest (7). A 429-acre wildfire burning in New Mexico's Carson National Forest remains uncontained (8); while a resident of Billings, Montana, has been charged with setting a wildfire that scorched 24 mi.² and cost $3.8 million to suppress (9). Three people who were doing target shooting near Chadron, Nebraska, which sparked an 83-acre wildfire will have to pay restitution (10). A trio of wildfires in Jefferson County, Ohio, kept firefighters busy on Thursday (11); a reminder that fall wildfire season has arrived (12). Smoke is reducing visibility for motorists in Morehead County, Kentucky, where a wildfire has scorched between 15 and 20 acres (13); one of 14 blazes burning in eastern Kentucky (14); while a resident of Ontario, Canada, got a costly lesson on the consequences of failing to extinguish a campfire that turned into a wildfire (15). In Europe, wildfires were reported in Greece and Bulgaria (16); and an MV-22 Osprey was pressed into firefighting service on the island of Okinawa, Japan, when artillery practice sparked a wildfire on a hillside (17). Australian Capital Territory's Emergency Services Agency Commissioner is resigning just as bushfire season begins (18). Nearly 3 dozen bushfires have been reported across Queensland, pushing the fire danger level to "very high" (19); including a fast-moving blaze outside of Mundubbera (20); a photo spread showing Queensland Fire and Rescue Service in action over the blazes (21); all of which has led to a heavy firefighter presence in parts of the state (22); in the meantime, an accused arsonist has been charged with lighting bushfires in Lockyer Valley (23). Bushfire survival preparation in New South Wales is the focus of the Kenthurst Resident Property Protection Program (24); followed by an update on bushfire activity in Western Australia, where several bushfires are burning in the Pilbara (25). And finally, Lysander, New York, firefighters had a rather unusual rescue to perform: saving a hunter dangling from his tree stand!
