WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 020511

With an estimated 5 million homes located in California's Wildland Urban Interface, some of the 145 areas across the state serviced by CAL FIRE are concerned about budget cutbacks at that agency which could place the burden of fighting wildfires squarely on the shoulders of local fire agencies (1); but Trinity County will receive $2 million to help refill the coffers after 190,000 acres burned during a lightning siege in 2008 (2); while Six Rivers National Forest will be sponsoring a meeting on February 16 to discuss thinning of the forest to reduce the wildfire danger (3). Arizona's Coconino National Forest will allow for public comment on forest recovery plans in the Schultz fire burn area through February 16 (4); and the Kaibab National Forest will have a meeting a week later to discuss fire protection plans for the city of Williams (5). The next article examines South Carolina's impending fire season in an era of budget cuts (6); while a wildfire in Polk County, Florida, burned hundreds of acres in Mosaic Peace River Park (7). In Africa, the Kenya Forest Service warned citizens to be cautious handling fire until rains arrive towards the end of February (8); and the government agreed to provide additional funds to areas hard-hit by drought and wildfires (9). A wildfire in China's Zhejiang Province resulted in six deaths and a pair of injuries from among the 300 people fighting the blaze (10). Firefighters in New South Wales, Australia, have battled 100 bushfires this week, the latest one burning in Megalong Valley in the Blue Mountains (11); while a fast-moving bushfire has burned over 1,000 acres northeast of Perth, Western Australia (12). And finally, a former Reading, Pennsylvania, Fire Chief demonstrates that for some firefighters, love of the profession may be genetic!
