WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 042013

An international team of researchers has determined that 25 million tons of dissolved charcoal from wildfires makes it into the oceans of the world each year (1). Wildfire NOTD subscriber Rick Hatton, CEO of Southern California-based 10 Tanker LLC, commented about their upcoming tour of Minnesota, South Dakota, and Montana, which commences on 4/22, in a press release (2); while firefighters across Southern California braced themselves for wildfires as the region appears to be on track for the fourth-driest year since 1877 (3); even as multiple agencies tackled a 1-1/2-acre blaze in the San Gabriel Mountains above Monrovia (4); and fire crews extinguished several small wildfires along Interstate 580 in Dublin (5); a quote from a Redding newspaper attributed to Wildfire Today underscoring the importance of early air-attack on wildfires to prevent a repeat of Colorado's Waldo Canyon Fire (6). Fire officials from New Mexico's Lincoln National Forest will be imposing fire restrictions on the Guadalupe Ranger District beginning tomorrow (7); but although a State Senate panel voted to advance the Colorado Firefighting Air Corps Bill, none of the $17.5 million required to fund the project was approved (8). Michigan's Department of Natural Resources stressed the importance of preventing wildfires to homeowners as part of their Wildfire Prevention Week observances (9); and on the 50th anniversary of New Jersey's Black Saturday wildfires, the next article takes a look back at 37 blazes which burned 183,000 acres between them (10). Two people have been arrested for setting wildfires that burned upwards of 4 acres on federal property in Acworth, Georgia (11). Wildfire NOTD subscriber Mikel Robinson, Executive Director of the International Association of Wildland Fire, sent along complete bios on presenters at their upcoming 4th Fire Behavior and Fuels Conference, to be held in St. Petersburg, Russia, July 1st-4th (12). And finally, instead of 'Snakes on a Plane', firefighters in Colorado encountered 'Snakes in a Basement'!
