WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 061813

We lead off today with a tally of the 10 worst wildfires in US history (1); a news analyst discussing the major news networks' focus on how sequestration cuts have impacted the federal firefighting force in the next article (2). In Southern California, Los Angeles County Fire Department warned of what could be the worst fire season ever across the region (3); while a fire station in Rancho Cucamonga is using landscaping to convey wildfire safety to residents as part of its Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Safety Education Project (4); but a trio of wildfires in the Sierra Nevada Mountains may signal an ominous uptick in wildfire activity (5); the smoke from the wildfires polluting the air of the San Joaquin Valley (6); and a 50-acre blaze threatened a high school in Fresno County (7); current conditions prompting Mendocino National Forest officials to ban open fires starting today (8). As day eight of the Black Forest wildfire dawned, 502 homes had been destroyed and 18 damaged at a suppression cost of $5.5 million (9); while a CBS News video segment follows the investigation of the origin of the Black Forest Fire, which has been attributed to human activity (10); the next article providing a useful map for evacuated areas in El Paso County (11); where many people's lives are still on hold as they wait to go home again (12); Wildfire NOTD subscriber Chris Mehl, Director of Public Policy at Headwaters Economics, commenting on the spiraling firefighting costs brought about due to unrestricted construction in wildfire areas (13); but following the death and destruction visited on Colorado by recent wildfires, residents lined the streets cheering long conveys of firefighters and National Guard troops who have been fighting the blazes (14); and in a sign of the return to normalcy, mail service resumed in the Black Forest area (15). As a trio of wildfires continued to burn in Utah, officials warned of a worsening fire situation over the next two days (16); but Maine Forest Service has implemented a program of education and vegetation clearance on the Casco Bay islands to reduce the fire danger (17). Wildfire activity in Yukon, Canada, is provided by the next article (18); and Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources reported two new wildfires in that province (19). Heading to Europe, wildfires were reported outside of Alfarràs, Spain, Gallura, Monte Arci, and Portoscuso, Italy, Floroaica, Romania, and near Beja in the North African nation of Tunisia (20); while a scarcity of water and strong winds have caused 600 ha of bushfires in Indonesia to burn out of control, disrupting airline flights in Riau Province with their smoke (21). Fire crews in New South Wales, Australia, plan to burn off twice as much hectarage as in previous years at a cost of $38 million (22); but an Op-Ed piece argues that more studies on fire management are needed after a fire season which saw Tasmania spend $45 million in fire suppression alone (23); where, following the January bushfires, a Facebook page has been created that helps provide information on bushfires (24); while the Bushfire Appeal Distribution Committee announced several new projects funded by donations (25). And finally, one horse owner had an emotional reunion with his mount, who went missing during the Colorado wildfires!
