WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 032509

As the FLAME Act comes up for a vote in the US House of Representatives, Helicopter Association International sent out a press release urging members to support the bill (HAI has over 1,600 member organizations). Ohio firefighters had some wildfires threatening structures to contend with; and Pennsylvania residents were advised of the threat of wildfires. Connecticut is on high fire alert as dry conditions continue; while firefighters in New Jersey had a small wildfire to contend with. Kentucky firefighters are thankful for some wetter weather; followed by three stories on West Virginia wildfires. With a number of suspicious wildfires that have been sparked in southern Alabama, a hot line has been established to alert fire agencies of any new ones. More details on the timber fires in Louisiana that destroyed upwards of $160,000 of stock are provided; followed by a story about a wind-driven wildfire that forced the evacuation of a school in southern Florida. They may be gone, but they're not forgotten: Google street views preserve towns in Victoria, Australia, that were destroyed by the Black Saturday bushfires. One suggestion being voiced at the bushfire hearings is that police need to use loudspeakers to alert residents of threatened towns of approaching bushfires; and looking to throw the book at bushfire arsonists, Australia's federal government plans to charge them with murder, rather than the customary 15-20 year prison sentence. And finally, firefighters deserved combat pay for battling through not only a house fire, but a herd of pit bulls!
