An ABC News video segment discusses five dozen wildfires burning across 10 Western states (1); followed by an overview of wildfire activity in California (2); and a summary of wildfire activity in Southern California, where the DC-10 saw some action in Riverside County yesterday (3); but the state capital is being inundated in wildfire smoke, prompting Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District to issue warnings to people with respiratory problems (4); and an editorial from the San Francisco Chronicle rails against the new fire fee being levied against 800,000 rural dwellers (5); while firefighters have brought containment on the Wye Fire, which has burned 7000 acres in Lake County, to 60% (6); but firefighters battling a 1,787-acre wildfire near Happy Camp are having to tread lightly (7). A summary of wildfire activity in Oregon is provided by the next item (8). An army of 800 firefighters has brought the 40 mi.² wildfire burning outside of Cle Elum, Washington, to 10% containment (9); heavy air-tankers making their presence felt over the blaze (10); an Op-Ed piece taking a closer look at the Department of Natural Resources' 2020 Strategic Plan for Wildland Fire Protection to deal with wildfires in a state that will probably see 600,000 new homes moving into wildland areas by the year 2020 (11). A 350-acre wildfire burning in Nevada's Virgin Mountains near Mesquite is 20% contained (12). As Arizona's monsoonal moisture dries out, the wildfire danger has increased (13); Tonto National Forest reporting that a 1,200-acre wildfire was being attacked from the air in difficult terrain (14). New Mexico's Gila National Forest, which has seen 46 lightning-sparked wildfires erupt since early July, is bracing for more of the same (15). Boise Airport is suffering through a busy summer as air-tankers share the only open runway with commercial flights (16); OSHA investigators in Idaho probing the death of a 20-year-old wildland firefighter killed by a falling tree (17); even as seasonal firefighters prepare to head back to school (18). Texas Forest Service provides an update on wildfires in that state in the next item (19); while an 888-acre wildfire in Wyoming's Shoshone National Forest has moved into the Fitzpatrick Wilderness area (20). Fires continue to crop up in Montana, where quick work by firefighters snuffed a blaze at Travelers' Rest State Park (21); the governor declaring 23 counties as "emergency areas" (22); Helena Regional Airport's air-tankers being credited with providing a critical service to crews on the fireline (23). Some insights on the thinking of US Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell is provided by a Washington Post article (24); but even though Pres. Obama has signed a bill which would provide health care benefits to seasonal firefighters, some wonder whether they will be able to afford the coverage (25). The International Association of Wildland Fire sent along an invitation to register for their upcoming Fire Behavior and Fuels Conference, to be held in Raleigh, North Carolina, in February (26); while heavy air attack by Canadian air-tankers on a wildfire near Vernon, British Columbia, resulted in quick containment of the blaze (27). Thailand's Forest Fire Control Division reported several wildfires that scorched 15,000 rai (about 6,000 acres) of forest land (31); and the difficulty of changing farmers' traditions of slash-and-burn plantation operations in South Sumatra, Indonesia, is examined by the next article (32). Queensland Fire and Rescue Service is concerned about the bushfire season ahead with fires already breaking out early (35). And finally, a Knoxville, Tennessee, firefighter has come up with a cool new invention - really cool!
