WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 070312

Wildfire NOTD subscriber Ty Bonnar, Vice President of Global Operations for Southern California-based Flexible Alternatives, Inc., sent along an update on the status of the military C-130 air-tanker fleet in the wake of Sunday's crash (1); an Edgemont, South Dakota, rancher providing an eyewitness account of the crash (2); and Wildfire NOTD subscriber Ed Story, CEO of the Aerial Fire Response & Research Network, sent along an announcement by US Northern Command that the remaining C-130s will take to the skies again today (3); a CNN segment providing more details on the fatalities (4); an aviation engineer from North Carolina expounding on the dangers of airborne firefighting, in which he states that the military is under no obligation to reveal the cause of the C-130 crash in South Dakota (5); while the following article explores Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack's views on Very Large Air Tankers (6). As wildfires continued to rage across the western US, the elephant in the room, climate change, seldom gets mentioned in the media, a new study finds (7); smoke from wildfires in the West has reached the Eastern Seaboard (8). Officials in Southern California's Cleveland National Forest have imposed fire restrictions due to the wildfire danger (9); while Gov. Jerry Brown's controversial wildfire liability bill, which would reduce the penalties paid by private companies that accidentally start wildfires, is again in the news (10); followed by a Washington Post video segment in which California smokejumpers are profiled (11). Wildfire activity in Nevada is the focus of the next article (12); followed by a summary of wildfire activity in Arizona which shows that a 19,100-acre wildfire burning in the Coronado National Forest is now 75% contained (13); but firefighters responded to a brushfire near Glendale Municipal Airport, the third such blaze in 72 hours (14). Wildfire NOTD subscriber Rob Rosovich, Director of Technical Operations at GelTech Solutions, sent along a press release about how effective their FireIce product was in stopping a wildfire on the Jicarilla Apache Nation Indian Reservation near Dulce, New Mexico (15). Firefighters have brought containment on Colorado's 17,920-acre Waldo Canyon Fire to 70%, allowing some residents to begin returning home (16); but as firefighters bring the wildfires in that state under control, the next article asks what comes afterwards (17). BBVA Compass Foundation donated $75,000 to the Red Cross to help Colorado wildfire survivors (18); while a T-shirt fundraising campaign is also helping (19); and Western Union said that it would match employee donations up to $50,000 in value (20). A wildfire near Utah's Scofield State Park has forced July Fourth vacationers to change their plans (21); but a 12-acre wildfire outside of Ogden was quickly contained by firefighters (22). Four major wildfires burning in Wyoming have forced hundreds to evacuate (23); and persistant hot, dry, windy weather has forced Montana's Gallatin National Forest to impose fire restrictions (24). Fire crews are being released from battling a 1,043-acre wildfire in central Nebraska as fire activity diminishes (25); and although firefighters have brought two wildfires in Missouri's Mark Twain National Forest under control, several new ones have broken out (26). A summary of wildfire activity in Arkansas, where 324 fires burned 4,873 acres in June, is provided by the next article (27); where volunteer firefighters are pitching in to help (28). Wildfire activity in Kentucky, where a wildfire burned a wooded area south of Junction City, is summarized by the next item (29); and a trio of wildfires has scorched hundreds of acres in Tennessee's Cherokee National Forest (30). Lightning strikes sparked numerous wildfires across Nova Scotia, Canada (31). NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer satellite provides a striking view of wildfires burning in Spain, where 111,200 acres have been charred near Valencia (32); claiming the life of a firefighting helicopter pilot (33). Firefighters on the ground and in the air grappled with a wildfire in Bulgaria's Vitosha Mountains near the capital of Sofia (34); while residents of southern Thailand are still choking on smoke from Indonesian forest fires (35). And finally, residents of drought-parched Colorado are turning to other means to fight fires: Christian prayer and American Indian medicine men!
