WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 031413

Wildfire NOTD subscriber Rich Brooks, a Reporter with the San Bernardino Press-Enterprise, interviewed wildfire NOTD subscriber Wayne Coulson, CEO of Coulson Flying Tankers, in regards to his efforts to convert a military C-130 aircraft into a night-flying air-tanker at Southern California's San Bernardino International Airport (1); and Wildfire NOTD subscriber Walt Darran, Chairman of the Associated Aerial Firefighters, provides some commentary on the lead article in yesterday's Wildfire NOTD discussing the potential closure of the Ramona Control Tower that serves a major Southern California air-tanker base (2); but the legal case against a man who sparked a 2,650-acre wildfire in Placer County with a firework has fallen apart (3). An editorial from Elko, Nevada, compares the planned cuts by the Bureau of Land Management and US Forest Service fire agencies in that state (4). New Mexico's U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce has cosponsored the Healthy Forest Management and Wildfire Prevention Act following a year in which over 300,000 acres burned across the state (5); and let's hope it gets passed soon, as US Forest Service is predicting an active wildfire season beginning in May (6); in the meantime, Santa Fe National Forest plans to continue with a set of 300 acres of controlled burns to reduce fuel (7). A teenaged former volunteer firefighter is being charged with setting a 400-acre wildfire in Boise County, Idaho, in 2012 (8); but following a year in which more than 1,400 wildfires burned over 500,000 acres, Utah is preparing for a new fire season (9). Fire managers met in Amarillo, Texas, to prepare for wildfires this summer in the Panhandle (10); where seven a recent blizzard hasn't reduced the wildfire danger in Lubbock County (11); but it may already be too late to prevent the impact of wildfires on the Monarch butterfly population (12). Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding property owners of the danger from spring wildfires in that state (13); and in Pennsylvania, a state which sees 10,000 acres burned annually, the governor has declared next week as Wildfire Prevention Week (14). Although the 401-acre wildfire in North Carolina's Croatan National Forest has been contained, firefighters will continue monitoring it (15). Fire crews continued to check on a 30-acre wildfire burning in Estero, Florida (16); while an 80-acre wildfire in Santa Rosa County has been contained (17). A Canadian press release from London, Ontario, indicated that Air Spray Aviation Services will be utilizing new software to maintain firefighting air fleets in Red Deer, Alberta, and Chico, California (18). In India, volunteers are being recruited to report forest fires in Bandipur National Park (19); but the bushfire danger has put forests in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty off-limits to visitors (20). Over 40 plaintiffs have signed onto a class-action suit against the Western Australian government over bushfire damage in Margaret River in 2011 (21). And finally, firefighters in Rochester, Minnesota, had an unusual hazard to deal with while battling an apartment fire: pythons!
