WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 052212

In Central California, Paso Robles Air Attack Base is gearing up for fire season (1); and Kern County Fire Department reminded homeowners of the wildfire danger in a county which saw over 100,000 acres burn last year (2); while the fire danger in the High Sierras around Lake Tahoe is the focus of the next article (3). Washington State Department of Natural Resources provided some tips on reducing the wildfire danger as Memorial Day weekend approached (4); and a wildfire near Fort Collins, Colorado, that has burned 7,685 acres and cost US Forest Service $2.9 million to suppress should be contained today (5). The following article provides an update on four major wildfires burning in Arizona (6); where the 14,963-acre Gladiator Fire has destroyed two more structures (7); even as Kaibab National Forest tightens fire restrictions due to the worsening wildfire conditions (8); while U-Haul is offering special rates for evacuees (9). Bastrop County's Emergency Management Coordinator won an award from the Small Business Administration for his efforts in dealing with the aftermath of the devastating wildfires that burned through that area in 2011 (10); where wildfire survivors have received an $830,000 windfall from the Austin Community Foundation (11). A 175-acre wildfire that burned outside of Ely, Minnesota, is now fully contained (12). Although recent rainfall has helped to dampen the wildfire danger in parts of Florida, Marion County Multi-Agency Wildland Task Force intends to keep the burn ban in place, for now anyway (13); but favorable weather allowed the Caloosahatchee Forestry Center to conduct controlled burns on 400 acres in Picayune Strand State Forest (14). A 700-hectare wildfire in Manitoba, Canada's, Riding Mountain National Park is now under control (15); however, a total of 38 wildfires have burned 28,272.1 hectares in the province of Ontario (16); where 300 evacuees from Kirkland Lake are hoping to go home as soon as a wildfire threatening their community is corralled (17); while Nova Scotia's Natural Resources Department assisted local firefighters in bringing a wildfire on the outskirts of Halifax under control (18). A lightning-ignited wildfire in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province has been extinguished (19); but a woman was killed and two others seriously injured by a wildfire in India's Uttarakhand state (20); and officials in Sarawak state, Malaysia, which has already recorded 352 hotspots since January, worried about wildfires during a dry season that lasts until September (21). The plight of a family from New Zealand trying to build a home in Ferny Creek, Victoria, highlights the problems with the bushfire buyback scheme offered by the state government (22). And finally, Zoos Victoria is counting on a tiny possum for a big job: helping boost population numbers after the Black Saturday bushfires destroyed 45 per cent of its habitat and roughly half the possums!
