Wildfire NOTD subscriber Bettina Boxall, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Reporter at the Los Angeles Times, discusses the milder than expected wildfire season across the US this year (1); while a 50-acre wildfire near the Southern California community of Moorpark challenged firefighters from Ventura County (2); the Stanislaus National Forest providing some details on a salvage logging proposal over 29,648 acres in the Rim Fire burn area (3). A Colorado state senator lobbied for more funding for wildfire mitigation efforts at a meeting in La Plata County Courthouse (4); while an editorial from Idaho offers a tip of the hat to wildland firefighters, equating their jobs with military veterans (5). Fuel mitigation efforts around the Canadian city of Nelson, British Columbia, are the focus of the next article (6). An update on Australia's Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC is provided by the next article (7); but following a 700-hectare bushfire in Queensland's Mooloolah River National Park, police were working with three young people to determine the origin of the suspicious blaze (8); while "Science for Wildlife" is reporting sightings of koala bears in parts of New South Wales that have not seen any since the 1940s, apparently due to displacement by recent bushfires (9). A 4.5-hectare bushfire which threatened homes on the outskirts of Perth, Western Australia, is now under control (10); and a 25-hectare bushfire has also been contained in Drovers Cave National Park (11); the Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner taking the opportunity to remind property owners to prepare their homes for bushfires (12). And finally, a helicopter company in Virginia shows how to keep tree limbs away from power lines to prevent wildfires: aerial saw trimming!
