WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 052112

Our first article today takes a look at CAL FIRE's assets at Porterville Air Attack Base and surrounding fire stations (1); while two wildfires that burned over the weekend in Kennewick, Washington, appeared to be arson (2); and a 125-acre wildfire near Cold Springs, Nevada, may have been started by target shooters (3). Wildfire activity in Arizona, where four wildfires have scorched 32,000 acres, is provided by the next article (4); firefighters bringing the 2,145-acre Bull Flat Fire to 90% containment (5); and more crews were being dispatched to help fight the blazes (6); but one firefighting crew deemed themselves lucky for not having been caught in a burnover (7); and weather forecasts are not favorable for firefighters (8); but at least firefighters were able to reduce the area burned by the Sunflower Fire in the Tonto National Forest (9). Firefighters have reported 87% containment on a 7,845-acre wildfire outside of Livermore, Colorado (10). National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health filed a report on hyperthermia among firefighters battling the Texas wildfires last year (11); and as Memorial Day approaches, Texas Forest Service reminded residents of that state of the fire danger after battling 363 fires that burned almost 18,000 acres around Memorial Day last year (12); even as Lufkin Wildfire Academy cranks out some more volunteers to help fight wildfires (13). A quartet of wildfires was reported in Vilas County, Wisconsin, over the weekend (14); while a 93-acre wildfire was reported near Nimrod, Minnesota, in an area that burned several weeks ago (15). The benefits of a wildfire that burned 741 acres of Pennsylvania's French Creek State Park are discussed in the next article (16). An out-of-control field fire near Columbia Falls kept firefighters from the Maine Forest Service busy over the weekend (17); while a Rhode Island-based insurance company provided some safety tips to policyholders in the Southwest on how to reduce wildfire danger to their homes (18). Several fires in Berkeley County, South Carolina, are sullying the skies around Charleston (19); and a 623-acre controlled burn breached containment lines in Bay County, Florida, threatening homes (20). A Canadian heli-tanker pilot whose Bell 212 crashed while fighting Alberta's Slave Lake wildfire last year has been honored with a memorial (21); while Ontario has closed some highways due to wildfire danger as over 140 blazes burn in the province (22); one of them, a 1,500-hectare wildfire, is threatening the town of Kirkland Lake (23); damaging power lines to the Young-Davidson mine site (24). A recent grant of $420,000 will fund completion of Victoria, Australia's, Bendigo bushfire memorial (25). And finally, everybody knows wildland firefighters have to pass a fitness test to go anywhere near the fireline, but did you know that Washington state's governor has to do the same?
