WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 030509

In wildfire news today, a pair of thieves nabbed robbing a home in Porter Ranch near Los Angeles, California, during the 2008 wildfire evacuations has been convicted; but Sierra Pacific Industries, a large logging firm, is closing a Northern California mill designed to process smaller trees provided by thinning programs. New Mexico is getting a fair number of acres burned by wildfires; and a Texas-based heavy air-tanker provided an assist to firefighters grappling with a wildfire in New Mexico. Military training produced the Quarry Fire that has burned over 6,500 acres on Fort Carson, Colorado; and the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center (Colorado's firefighting headquarters) has put in a request for a heavy air-tanker and a helicopter air-tanker in light of the worsening fire conditions in parts of that state. A northwestern Oklahoma town's citizens are getting a mandatory evacuation notice as a wildfire nears; while Texas counties are reporting increased wildfire activity, including one that started out as a controlled burn. The medical dimension of disasters, such as bushfires, will be addressed at a conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, in May. Hot weather is putting fire agencies on alert in Viet Nam; while South Africa's largest city is surrounded by wildfires burning in the hills as they suffer through a region-wide drought. Australia's 'stay and defend' policy is reexamined in light of the fatalities wrought by bushfires on Black Saturday; and in a bizarre (though welcome) twist, snow fell in Victoria's alpine regions just a day after bushfire warnings there. Families of victims of the 'Black Saturday' bushfires anxiously awaited release of their remains by the coroner's office; but with echoes of the torturous path Line-Of-Duty-Death (LODD) claims in the US often follow, a firefighter's family in Australia may be denied benefits by authorities. And finally, better check the id on firefighters coming to your door - they may not be who they appear to be (although these fakes undoubtedly saved lives)!
