WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 110411

A Southern California horse owner who lives in San Diego County recounts her experiences escaping an October wildfire (1); while several individuals have been honored by the Oregon Board of Forestry for educating people on, among other things, wildfires (2). Volunteers are assisting the US Forest Service in rebuilding trails in Arizona's White Mountains which were ravaged by the Wallow Fire (3); even as Arizona Game and Fish Department announced that it would be conducting controlled burns on 6,300 acres in the Tonto National Forest (4). A dispute with US Forest Service has held up Colorado's Sugar Loaf Fire Protection District Land Exchange Act in Congress, a bill which would provide better wildfire protection for citizens of Boulder (5). A Texas AgriLife Extension Service Range Specialist held a webinar discussing how invasive weeds that fuel wildfires are being brought in on hay bales from other states (6); while the Texas Forestry Association drafted a resolution praising firefighters all over Texas for their efforts in battling wildfires (7). A wildfire in Minnesota's Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge has increased in size to 200 acres (8); but the former commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources praises the US Forest Service for its efforts battling the massive wildfire which raged through Superior National Forest this summer (9). More fire crews continued to arrive at Missouri's Mark Twain National Forest to help battle a 5,000-acre wildfire (10); while a wildfire arsonist who set a blaze in Kentucky's Daniel Boone National Forest last March has been sentenced to 27 months in jail (11). Municipal governments in British Columbia, Canada, like the Regional District of Central Kootenay, may soon be paying much more to reduce the wildfire threat in their area (12). The wildfire burning on France's Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean has reached 2,626 ha in size (13); while high winds and hail forced firefighters and aircraft to withdraw from battling a bushfire which has burned one square kilometer in New Zealand's Danseys Pass (14). Victoria's Minister for Bushfire Response will be giving landowners who would like the state government to buy back their property due to the bushfire threat a chance to speak on the topic at a meeting November 10th (15); even as Country Fire Authority officials warned of an elevated bushfire danger due to warm temperatures this weekend (16); but at least one bushfire-devastated community will be getting a new meeting hall built for them (17); while a man on trial in the Victorian Supreme Court who is accused of setting wildfires that resulted in several deaths during Black Saturday has requested bail (18). Due to the large amount of fuel in Queensland, Gympie's Local Disaster Management Group has begun bushfire planning (19).
