As firefighters make progress roping in wildfires in Central Washington, hundreds of firefighters have been released from the fireline (8); where a 13,727-acre blaze in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest has topped $7 million in suppression costs (9); a fire behavior analyst weighing in on the health of forests in the vicinity of the Table Mountain Fire (10). A 3,400-acre wildfire burning near Gardnerville, Nevada, is now 70% contained (11). A 213-acre wildfire is burning in Colorado's Flat Tops Mountains (12); but an Op-Ed piece from US Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell states that millions of acres are now more resilient to wildfire due to their fire and restoration policy (13). U.S. Forest Service's Wind River Agency indicated that a wildfire burning near Bull Lake, Wyoming, has reached 42,402 acres in size (14); but beginning in October Casper College's Fire Science Program will be offering wildland firefighter training courses (15). An overview of wildfires in Montana is provided by the next article (16); where three blazes are burning on the Flathead Indian Reservation (17); and a 5 1/2 mi.² wildfire in Musselshell County should be contained by Tuesday (18). A trio of wildfires continue to blaze across North Dakota (19); while US Forest Service is proposing a thinning project in South Dakota's Black Hills to reduce the fuel loads exacerbated by the mountain pine beetle (20). A communications specialist from Prince George's County, Maryland, recounts his experiences helping firefighters with a 4,000-acre wildfire in the mountains of Northern California (21). A 20-hectare wildfire was reported west of Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia (22); a two-acre wildfire coming within 10 feet of a Summerland home (23). Air-tankers grappled with a wildfire burning in mountainous terrain outside of Valencia, Spain, which forced the evacuation of 2,000 people (24); but families of people killed by 2010's Carmel Forest fire boycotted the official memorial ceremony to protest the fact that no officials charged with responsibility in dealing with the deadly blaze have been punished (25). The efforts of Victoria, Australia's, Department of Sustainability and Environment and Parks Victoria fire crews to conduct controlled burns across the state is examined by the next article (26); where the Emergency Services Commissioner warned that there are still problems with spotty cell phone coverage which would limit the effectiveness of bushfire warnings (27). Fire crews are fighting to contain a wind-driven bushfire in Queensland's Atherton Tableland (28); and a 30,000-hectare blaze was cloaking Mount Isa in a smoky haze (29); while a six-hectare fire was reported outside of Upper Brookfield (30); a bushfire outside of Redlands Bay threatening homes, along with a 5,000 L gas tank (31); even as Queensland Fire and Rescue Service officials warned residents of the Glass House Mountains that bushfire season is already upon them (32); nevertheless, fire crews felt that they had dodged a bullet with so few bushfires over the weekend (33). A 36-hectare bushfire was reported outside of Dudley, New South Wales (34). A bushfire burning near Port Hedland, Western Australia, has forced road closures (35); while Shire of Augusta-Margaret River rangers are being recognized for their yeoman work during bushfires last year (36). And finally, Los Angeles City Fire Department has found a new way to get firefighters through snarled traffic to emergencies: motorcycles!
