WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 110608

Today in the news, three stories about San Diego's Prop A lead off: One on the loss despite a fire-prone history; one on how disappointed officials were about the loss; and one that sounded a hopeful note with comments by Jeff Bowman and Steve Erie of the San Diego Regional Fire Safety Forum. A Red Flag warning has been issued for Southern California, beginning tonight, while fire authorities in Florida are taking no chances, beginning preventative burns ahead of wind conditions in that (surprisingly) dry state. Arizona is following Florida's lead on prescribed burns, and two articles out of Kentucky chronicle the fires burning there and the problems smoke from them is causing to residents. Two stories out of Utah as well: the first recounts how the government is trying to recoup agricultural losses of $29 million due to fire damage; the second discusses helicopter operations in repairing burn areas. Heading overseas, France is in the news today, first with an article about a study on WUI issues in the Mediterranean as residential areas encroach on wilderness areas, something that has echoes of the Landfire project in the US, followed by another about France's air-tanker fleet, based in Marignane. A legal story out of Canada next that demonstrates that whether it's a burn barrel or power lines that cause a wildfire, the road to a settlement can be a tortuous one. Venturing south to Australia, dire predictions are being made about damage to the South Australian infrastructure due to climate change, while residents of Manoora are being educated on bushfire (and general disaster) safety next week. Finally, a cautionary tale about how being a little too innovative on getting rid of those pesky cobwebs around the house can lead to a call to the local fire department.
