WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 100912

Wildfire NOTD subscriber Tom Lasser, a retired lieutenant colonel from the California National Guard, sent along an update on the upcoming Wings, Wheels & Rotors event at Southern California's Los Alamitos Army Airfield which will feature numerous first responders and public safety agencies (1); while CAL FIRE crews quickly snuffed a small wildfire in Monterey County's Jacks Peak Park (2). In Oregon, the Douglas Forest Protective Association issued a press release about a two-acre wildfire near Susan Creek footbridge (3). More details on how exploding targets sparked a 120-acre wildfire near Entiat, Washington, are provided by the next article (4); while a pair of small fires were also reported along the Puget Sound (5); but hunters will be shut out of some private timber stands in Klickitat, Yakima and Skamania counties due to the fire danger (6). An 85-acre wildfire near Pagosa Springs, Colorado, is now 70% contained (7); while ecologists with Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks were pleased with rehabilitation in an area burned by the 300-acre Flagstaff Fire (8); the impact of Colorado's wildfires on the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts being examined by the next article (9). Following approval by Supervisors, Travis County, Texas, will be procuring a new $2.4 million helicopter for, among other things, wildland firefighting (10); and the Texas Forestry Museum unveiled a new exhibit covering the wildfires of 2011 which ravaged East Texas (11). Officials from Wyoming's Shoshone National Forest held a symposium last week to discuss how best to address the problem of beetles devastating timber (12). A lawsuit for damages done by a 2010 controlled burn which got out of hand has been initiated against Montana's Helena National Forest (13); while Wildfire NOTD subscriber Dan Snyder, President of Montana-based Neptune Aviation, commented on the US Forest Service's decision to reopen bidding for next-generation air-tankers following protests by California-based 10 tanker LLC and Canadian-based Coulson Flying Tankers (14). An editorial from Minnesota discusses the very active wildfire season in the US this year, which is still not over (15); and although the above-ground fires have diminished, blazes now going underground (16); while a small town is trying to get back on an even keel after wildfires destroyed a number of structures (17). Firefighters in Buffalo County, Wisconsin, battled a large wildfire overnight (18); while in Canada, British Columbia's Coastal Fire Centre reported the smell of smoke in the air near Whistler due to several wildfires (19). Wildfire activity in the Mediterranean Basin continued to diminish, with only two wildfires reported in Macedonia and the North African nation of Algeria (20); but a 10-acre wildfire was also reported near the Bulgarian capital of Sofia (21). An update on firefighters' progress with bushfires in New South Wales, Australia, is provided by the next article (22); even as residents fear that bushfires that raced through Wyee and Pretty Beach last week could be a portent of the future (23); a psychologist weighing in on the emotional impact of evacuation orders during bushfires (24); the refusal by Parks and forestry staff to fight bushfires until their compensation concerns are addressed making the public safety issue even more dangerous (25). Queensland Fire and Rescue Service warned property owners in the southwestern part of that state about the extreme bushfire danger over the next couple of days (26). And finally, firefighters in Fresno, California, gave kids with special needs a day to remember!
