Firefighters battled a 1,500-acre wildfire burning in Lake County, Oregon (9); but rolling debris caused problems for firefighters battling a seven-acre wildfire in rugged terrain in the Willamette National Forest (10); and although mechanical equipment is typically banned from federally designated wilderness areas, US Forest Service gave permission to use chainsaws and helicopters on wildfires burning along the California border (11). A wildfire which scorched 10 mi.² near Chelan, Washington, is nearly under control (12); but as firefighters battled a 10,000-acre grass fire outside of Selah, burn bans were invoked in Naches and Cle Elum ranger districts (13). A 26,951-acre wildfire burning in Nevada's Washoe County continues to expand unabated (14). A wildfire which has scorched 34,021 acres in Idaho's Salmon-Challis National Forest is now 3% contained (15); smoke from wildfires causing delays along Highways 55 and 17 (16). As firefighters battled wildfires across the state, they are trying to keep a 3,042-acre wildfire on the grounds of Utah National Guard’s Camp Williams away from an artillery practice range which contains unexploded ordnance (17). Investigators continue to probe the origins of six wildfires in Cleveland County, Oklahoma, deemed suspicious (18); four solid days of firefighting taking their toll on fire crews (19); and with 178,000 acres burned and over 100 homes destroyed in the state, pet owners in Tulsa have been offered free boarding for their four-legged friends at VCA Animal Hospitals (20); but not everyone is looking out for the best interests of wildfire evacuees (21). Wildfire activity in Montana, where the Highway Patrol suffered a communications failure when a wildfire destroyed a transmission tower on Little Wolf Mountain, is summarized in the next article (22); while much of western Montana is suffering from an abundance of wildfire smoke generated by blazes in Idaho and Montana (23). Ohio Department of Natural Resources recounted contributions by its firefighters battling wildfires in northeastern Idaho (24); a new study from Connecticut's Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies connecting methane production from diseased trees with Global Warming, which has been blamed for increased wildfire activity worldwide (25); while a 20-person crew is being dispatched from Delaware to Idaho to help battle wildfires (26). Wildfire NOTD subscriber Ed Story, CEO of Aerial Fire Response & Research Network, sent along an article in which Wildfire NOTD subscriber Wayne Coulson, CEO of Coulson Flying Tankers, discusses the $5,000 reward he is offering for information about vandals who damaged the Hawaii Mars as it lay at anchor in Port Alberni, British Columbia, over the weekend (27). Higher humidity and lower temperatures helped firefighters battling wildfires on Spain's Canary Islands gain the upper hand (28); and firefighters in Bulgaria gained ground on a 4,000-decare (988-acre) wildfire burning near Belitsa (29). Firefighters had a trio of wildfires to deal with in Israel's eastern Carmel mountains (30). Australian researchers have discovered that horizontal convective rolls played an important part in the devastating Black Saturday bushfires of 2009 (31); and with the approach of bushfire season, Queensland's Sunshine Coast Council is scheduling a number of controlled burns (32); while Bushfires NT firefighters battled a blaze which scorched between 300 and 400 ha outside of Darwin, Northern Territory (33).
