WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 040813

An article from Chico, California, looks at how the local branch of Canadian firefighting concern Airspray may purchase an Air Bulgaria BAE-146 to become an air-tanker (1); an Op-Ed piece from New Mexico discussing scientific approaches to fighting wildfires (2). The problem of underinsurance preventing homeowners from rebuilding homes destroyed in Colorado's wildfires is scrutinized by the next article (3); while the Climate Prediction Center weighed in on what the Texas wildfire season should look like in the next article (4). Although US Forest Service has apologized for starting a 10,800-acre wildfire on the Grand River National Grasslands in the Dakotas, not everyone is in a forgiving mood (5); and while colder than normal weather has reduced wildfire activity so far this year, Nebraska Forest Service is still focused on what the summer could bring (6). A 10-acre wildfire was reported in Illinois' Shawnee National Forest (7); and Kentucky Forestry Division firefighters battled a 25-acre wildfire in Montgomery County (8). Several wildfires broke out across Pennsylvania over the weekend (9); a pair of air-tankers being called in to help battle a 500-acre blaze outside of Shenango Township (10); fireworks at a minor league baseball game being blamed for one wildfire (11); while the next article takes a look back at a 741-acre wildfire that blazed through French Creek State Park last Easter (12). Firefighters battled a 10-acre wildfire outside of Florence, Vermont (13); and Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection used the occasion of a wildfire in Osbornedale State Park to warn the public of the fire danger and offer a few tips on how to protect themselves (14). Fire crews from as far away as New Jersey assisted dozens of firefighters battling a wildfire in New York's Harriman State Park (15); meanwhile, New Jersey had a few wildfires of its own to fight (16); including a 150-acre blaze in Wharton State Forest (17). A 400-acre wildfire raced across a dry lake bed in Florida's Ocala National Forest (18); even as Florida Forest Service personnel worked to snuff out a 360-acre wildfire in St. Lucie County (19); but federal budget cuts could impact the wildfire activity in that state (20). A large gorse fire was reported in County Fermanagh, Ireland (21); while Italy's Civil Protection Department dispatched two CL-415 air-tankers to Libya to assist with a 100-hectare wildfire (22). Over 500 personnel are manning the firelines as a forest fire continues to burn in southwest China's Yunnan Province (23); but hunting parties are being blamed for wildfires breaking out in Koraput, India (24). As part of Thailand's "Hunt the Smog" project, people who snap a photo of a forest fire will receive a reward (25). Researchers from Victoria's Monash University Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine will be studying the health effects of bushfire smoke on Yarra Valley communities (26); but the Australian Federal Police arrested a man accused of wanting to spark bushfires as a terrorist weapon (27). Following some damage to outbuildings from bushfires in New South Wales in January, Australian National University has re-opened its Siding Spring Observatory (28).
