In the news today, wildfires are still burning in several states (Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and, of course, California), as recounted by the first five articles. The massive wildfire in North Carolina is nearly out, while the cleanup bill in San Diego County is being reviewed for excessive padding (on the order of a three-fold overcharge!) Fire managers are nervously watching the skies as more lightning is expected in California. On the international scene, two stories record the wildfires Lebanon is fighting (amid the minefields again, I wonder?) Finally, two stories from Yellowstone National Park: one on the recovery of the park from the huge wildfires in 1988 and the second on a danger that few firefighters ever consider – being attacked by the wildlife while fighting wildfires! So much for Smokey Bear’s reputation as a good guy.
