WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 071309

The Martin Mars has (finally) arrived at Lake Elsinore, California; and it may be none too soon as a pair of small blazes needed to be dealt with by firefighters in San Diego County over the weekend. A look at the wildfire situation in Southern California is up next; underscored by a wildfire in La Verne yesterday that is believed to have been arson caused. A series of wildfires was sparked in the Sierras east of Sacramento on Sunday; and a lightning-sparked wildfire resulted from a storm that rolled through Northern California. A bird that collided with a power line in Central California sparked a small wildfire; while an argument for a sensible forest thinning policy for California is the central theme of the next item. A pair of lightning-sparked wildfires added to those already burning in Arizona over the weekend. The impact of wildfires on the bottom line of insurance providers (and policyholders) is examined by the next item. A wildfire in Oklahoma was still burning over the weekend; even as an arsonist may be at work in Lufkin, as the Texas Forest Service is facing what may be the worst fire danger in ten years across the state. A wildfire has been reported in Bitterroot National Forest in Montana; followed by a National Public Radio segment that talks about wildfires. Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources is cancelling burn permits as that state suffers through its fifth year of drought. After a slow start, Alaska's fire season has taken off, with a total of 68 wildfires now burning in that state. A major wildfire is burning in Argentina, even though its officially winter there; and wildfires are still cropping up in Israel. A wildfire was reportedly burning in a teak forest on the island nation of Sri Lanka. A fair amount of smoke drifted through Darwin as wildfires continued to burn in Australia's Northern Territory. And finally, Al Gore has set up a new organization in Australia to address worsening bushfires due to climate change.
