WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 021012

A wildfire burned across 700 acres on Southern California's Camp Pendleton Marine base Thursday (1). The effort by an Arizona lawmaker to use conservation funds on forests damaged by wildfires is drawing fire from critics of the plan (2); but the Bureau of Land Management is calling for volunteers to help plant cottonwood trees in wildfire-ravaged parts of that state (3). Although a lack of wind helped firefighters corral a 40-acre wildfire in New Mexico's Bernardo Wildlife Area earlier this week, continued dry conditions promise a bad fire season ahead (4); while in Idaho, Colville and Idaho Panhandle National Forests will be receiving $90 million over the next 10 years for restoration projects (5). Wildlife biologists are delaying wildfire debris cleanup in Bastrop County, Texas, due to concerns for the endangered Houston toad's breeding ground (6); and an Op-Ed piece from Montana discusses the benefits of forest restoration management efforts in that state (7). Officials in Ohio are asking for public input on the Stark County Multi-Jurisdictional All-Hazard Mitigation Plan, which addresses natural disasters such as wildfires occurring in that county (8). A stubborn marsh fire near New Orleans, Louisiana, continues to defy efforts by firefighters to extinguish it (9); as Alabama firefighters practiced battling a simulated forest fire in Shelby County's Oak Mountain State Park yesterday (10); while Alabama Forestry Commission firefighters fought the real thing in St. Clair County (11). A 1,200-acre controlled burn planned for North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest was postponed due to poor burning conditions (12); and South Carolina Forestry Service firefighters battled five wildfires that were labeled 'suspicious' yesterday (13). Florida fire officials have issued warnings for Duval, Nassau and Clay counties due to the extreme wildfire danger as the National Weather Service predicts little rainfall in the near future (14). An official from Ghana's Ministry of Health commented on the detrimental effects of indiscriminate bush burning in that African nation (15). Bushfire-resistant decking from Australia is highlighted by the next article (16); while Country Fire Authority firefighters are battling a bushfire near Skipton, Victoria (17). Homeowners in Augusta Margaret River Shire, Western Australia, were reminded that the Lord Mayor's fund, which has handed out $300,000 to wildfire survivors so far, will stop taking applications early next month (18); as the Department of Environment and Conservation reported bushfires burning near Giblett, Dingup, Diamond, Poole, Unicup, Babbington, Warrup and Mooralup (19); FESA officials reporting a small, lightning-sparked bushfire burning near Torbay as well (20). And finally, firefighters in Redondo Beach, California, found a unique way to try to get their fire station's kitchen remodeled: a music video!
