WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 031813

Wildfire NOTD subscriber George Ewan, Wildfire Planner for Orange County Fire Authority, comments on the wildfire danger a dry spring poses for Southern California (1); while a body was found in the midst of a seven-acre wildfire that burned through the Inland Empire's Santa Rosa Indian Reservation (2). Fearing the danger that wildfires could do to nearby watershed, Flagstaff, Arizona, is taking steps to prevent that from happening (3). As precipitation helped bring containment of Larimer County, Colorado's, 1,000-acre Galena Fire to 75%, US Senator Mark Udall reiterated the need for better support by federal air-tankers (4); improving conditions allowing evacuees to return home (5). Fire crews contained a 145-acre wildfire in Sevier County, Tennessee, with the help of two Tennessee Air National Guard helicopters (6); while a video segment provides some information on wildfires burning in Tennessee and South Carolina (7). The Alabama Forestry Commission reported that they had dealt with 198 wildfires that burned 6,655 acres last week (8); and a 250-acre wildfire in Hancock County, Mississippi, is reportedly out (9). North Carolina Forest Service summarizes recent wildfires in the next article (10); offering some advice to property owners in Davidson County about how best to conduct debris burns in the one that follows (11). After a weekend in which over 100 wildfires burned statewide, South Carolina Forestry Commission has lifted Red Flag conditions for much of the state (12); while police in Horry County are investigating two suspicious wildfires which destroyed 109 condominiums over the weekend (13); anxious residents coping with the personal impact of the disaster (13); the Red Cross doing what it can to help (15). A six-acre wildfire was reported outside of Jupiter, Florida (16); and two wildfires blazed through Volusia County (17); wildfire smoke being blamed for traffic accidents on Interstate 95 near Oak Hill (18); a 15-acre blaze in Santa Rosa County being contained (19). The Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca reported its first wildfire of the season (20); and in anticipation of a harsh summer, India's Palamu Tiger Reserve is bracing for forest fires (21). A wildfire was reported outside of the village of Telamba, Brunei, on the island of Borneo (22); while more bushfires may be in New Zealand's future according to a report from Victoria, Australia (23). Australian Capitol Territory Parks and Conservation is conducting a 264-hectare prescribed burn in the Namadgi National Park to reduce the bushfire danger (24); but testimony continued in Victoria regarding the class-action suit against SP AusNet, whose equipment is blamed for a February 2009 Kilmore East Black Saturday bushfire that killed 119 people (25). Veterinarians and Rangers from New South Wales' Hume Livestock Health and Pest Authority earned high praise for their work assisting farmers and ranchers during January's bushfires (26). And finally, firefighters in Palm Beach County, Florida, had a tricky extrication to perform: some wayward ducklings who needed to be flushed out of a storm drain!
