WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 081112

An Op-Ed piece argues against US Forest Service's new policy to extinguish every fire large and small in order to cut suppression costs (1). A 1,650-acre wildfire near the Southern California community of Warner Springs is now 30% contained (2); while smokejumpers from Redding are keeping an eye on the remnants of 13 lightning-sparked wildfires in the San Bernardino National Forest (3); and a 30-acre wildfire on the grounds of Chino State Prison is now 60% contained (4); but strong winds are making firefighting difficult on an 11,000-acre wildfire burning near Mono Lake (5); some striking video of the DC-10 dropping on a 61,000-acre wildfire near Eagleville being provided by the next item (6); while firefighters finally corralled a 260-acre wildfire in the Stanislaus National Forest's Carson-Iceberg Wilderness Friday night (7); but wildfire suppression costs in Northern California are climbing towards $10 million as blazes continue to rage across the region (8). Hot weather helped a wildfire burning along Oregon's border with Nevada to expand to 400 mi.² in size (9); and wildfires were burning elsewhere in the state as well (10); including the 11,500-acre Barry Point Fire (11); but fire officials have invoked Industrial Fire Precautions across Central Washington to reduce the chance of wildfires (12). A pair of wildfires in Nevada continue to expand (13); while over half-a-dozen lightning-sparked wildfires are burning in Arizona's Tonto National Forest (14). The impact of wildfires on landslides in Idaho's Boise National Forest is examined by the next article (15); dozens of new wildfires being sparked across that state by lightning strikes (16); while firefighters in Utah were hoping the same wouldn't happen to them (17). Several organizations stepped forward to offer assistance to Oklahoma's wildfire survivors (18); but in Texas, a pair of wildfires have scorched nearly 3,000 acres near Possum Kingdom Lake (19). A 142-acre wildfire continues to burn in Wyoming's Alpine Lakes area (20); a summary of wildfire activity in Montana being provided by the next item (21). In British Columbia, Canada, Kelowna Fire Department had to call in air-tanker support to help corral a wildfire which generated several spot ignitions (22). Wildfires were reported in Greece, Italy, Bosnia, Macedonia, and Montenegro (23); wildfires in Spain and Greece threatening UN Heritage Sites as triple-digit temperatures were the order of the day across much of southern Europe (24). Heading to Australia, New South Wales Rural Fire Service is battling an 1,100-hectare bushfire south of Sydney (25); while firefighters in Mulgowie, Queensland, fear that an arsonist may be lighting bushfires in the Lockyer Valley (26). And finally, Smokey Bear's 68th birthday was honored with the unveiling of his statue in Kittery, Maine!
