WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 041813

In the Southern California mountain community of Crestline, the Crest Forest Fire Protection District is moving forward with plans to empower San Bernardino County Fire Department to handle wildfire-fighting in the future (1); but Red Flag warnings will be in effect through Friday for Riverside County due to high winds and low humidity (2); prompting CAL FIRE to activate their air-tanker fleet a week early (3). The Arizona State Forestry Division has had to change its thinking about what constitutes a "large" wildfire and an "average" fire season (4). As fire crews brought the 109-acre Curtis Fire to 10% containment near Mayhill, New Mexico, evacuees were being allowed to return home (5); while a 25-acre wildfire in the Coronado National Forest near Sonoita continues to expand (6). A wildfire risk presentation will be made by the Forest Health Task Force in Summit County, Colorado, on April 24th (7); while Lory State Park northwest of Fort Collins will be reopening following a 1,300-acre wildfire last month (8); even as fire agencies distributed wildfire preparation literature in communities around Aspen (9); but proponents of a state-owned air-tanker force are proposing sponsorship opportunities on those air-tankers to help defray costs (a la NASCAR) (10). Following approval of $400,000 to establish four more fire protection districts in Idaho, additional farmers and ranchers are receiving training in how to fight wildfires (11); while fire crews received basic wildland firefighting training from Montana's Department of Natural Resources and Conservation in Plains (12). Cook County, Illinois, plans to conduct over 100 controlled burns to renew forest land (13); details of the US Forest Service's $4.9 billion budget presented before the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources in Washington, DC, yesterday being examined by the next article (14). South Carolina Forestry Commission announced a "Protect My House" Town Hall meeting in Myrtle Beach which aims to educate homeowners on the danger wildfires pose one month after the Windsor Green Fire, which destroyed over 100 condominiums (15). The Georgia Forestry Commission has purchased half a dozen heavy mowers to help reduce wildfire fuel in forested areas (16); while a wildfire was reported on the grounds of Eglin Air Force Base in Florida (17). Heading to Canada, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources ignited some controlled burns in Toronto's High Park (18); but there was spirited debate in Saskatchewan over proposed changes to the Prairie and Forest Fires Act (19). A wildfire in the UK's Thetford Forest prompted police to slow traffic on A134 due to visibility problems caused by smoke (20); and two more wildfires have been reported in France: a five-hectare blaze outside of Saint-Zacharie, and a 120-hectare fire near Beignon (21). Heavy precipitation has extinguished several wildfires that were burning across Mongolia, which lost almost 82,000 km² to wildfires over the past two years (22); while fire authorities in India are taking steps to reduce the number of forest fires in the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh, which reported 1,798 wildfires last summer (23).
