WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 061113

Wildfire NOTD subscriber David Cant, Business Development Manager for Australian firefighting gel purveyor BlazeTamer 380, found an impressive YouTube video of the DC-10 dropping on Southern California's Powerhouse Fire on a windy day where you can see the aircraft bucking against the turbulence (2); while fire crews brought a 3 mi.² wildfire outside of Banning to 25% containment (3); state officials revealing that the cost of wildfires in California have topped $204 million since last July 1st, the highest cost in the past three years (4); but CAL FIRE arson investigators believe they're dealing with a serial arsonist behind several wildfires set at Yosemite Lakes Park (5). In an article from Washington state, State Farm Insurance offered a few tips on how to prepare for wildfires (6). An update on wildfires in New Mexico is provided by the next article (7); where a three-acre blaze was burning near Borrego Mesa (8). US Sen. Mark Udall announced that nearly $20 million to help Colorado repair damaged water supplies and reduce flood risk following wildfires has finally been authorized (9); even as wildfires broke out on the hottest day of the year so far (10); but a small blaze in the town of Fraser was fully contained yesterday afternoon (11). The Bureau of Land Management is investigating two small wildfires in southern Idaho that have burned 400 acres between them (12). As Utah bakes under hot, dry, windy conditions, the National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook advisory in regards to the wildfire danger (13); even as people with respiratory problems take measures to deal with wildfire smoke (14). South Dakota Wildland Fire Division reported two small lightning-sparked wildfires (15); while StormCon, which takes place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, this August, will present "Fire & Rain: Rapid Assessment and Emergency Mitigation Measures Following Wildfires" (16). An update on the wildfire situation in Ontario, Canada, where six new wildfires have been reported, is provided by the next article (17); but after delivering its 87th CL-415 air-tanker to Morocco, Canadair may close down production of this iconic aircraft (18). Heading to Europe, a small wildfire was reported at the Cod Beck Reservoir near Osmotherley in Yorkshire, UK (19); while in the Mediterranean Basin, wildfires were reported outside of Estepona, Spain, Alanno, Italy, and Toroni, Chalkidiki, Greece (20). Jerramungup Shire, Western Australia, is seeking ways to increase bushfire defenses in areas currently considered impossible to defend (23). And finally, California National Guardsmen from First Battalion, 160th Infantry Regiment, demonstrated how to put on 60 pounds of firefighting gear at the Porterville Fire Department in two minutes flat!
