First up in the news today, Rio Hondo Fire Academy Coordinator and Water Cache Project board member Tracy Rickman submitted an article about cadets from the Academy helping out firefighters in Monrovia, Arcadia, and Sierra Madre. With the onset of fall, more controlled burns are in the news, as a story from New Mexico demonstrates, and areas in Nevada are lifting fire restrictions, another sign the weather is changing for the better. But despite the onset of fall, some areas are still experiencing wildfires: two in California, one in Colorado, and one in Montana. Two articles about programs to aid families stricken by the 2007 wildfires in the San Diego region follow. Next up, an environmental piece that examines the impact of mountain pine beetles and how various universities and other organizations are teaming up to combat the problem. Shrugging off the danger, Cal Fire aviators are still taking to the skies to battle wildfires. Moving overseas, residents in southern Africa are reflecting on the cost of veldt fires there this year, while environmentalists are laying into Greek authorities about wildfires on the Mediterranean island of Rhodes. As if Sri Lanka doesn't already have enough trouble with a civil war, they are also having some wildfire problems. Russia and China are having a joint wildfire exercise in the Far East, including some of the famous Russian Avialesookhrana (smokejumpers). Australia is bracing for an active bushfire season as it officially starts throughout much of the country. And finally, remember that birthday card about the fire department being called when you light your birthday candles..?
