An overview of wildfire activity across the western US is provided by our first article today (1); followed by a story about the contribution of California National Guard aviators to the battle against wildfires in the Golden State (2); where firefighters continued to patrol a 2,681-acre wildfire that burned in Riverside County and is now considered contained (3); but a Southern California resident has been charged with assaulting a fire captain during that fire (4); even as firefighters in San Diego County brought two lightning-sparked wildfires closer to containment, allowing evacuees from Ranchita and San Felipe to return home (5); while a wildfire which burned nearly 24 acres in El Dorado County has been contained (6); but a 209,638-acre fire in Northern California is threatening some of Nevada's natural gas and power lines (7); and CAL FIRE reported that wildfires in Lake and Colusa Counties tallied up to $6.8 million in suppression costs (8); while a 27,777-acre wildfire burning in Lassen National Volcanic Park is now 32% contained (9). Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality issued air-quality alerts for Klamath, Lake and Malheur Counties due to wildfire smoke (10); and portions of the Pacific Coast Trail have been closed by US Forest Service in the Klamath National Forest because of nearby wildfires (11); officials in Willamette National Forest drawing up plans on how to evacuate their forest if dry lightening strikes sparked wildfires (12). National Weather Service was forecasting lightning strikes for parts of Western Washington (13); but although investigators are still trying to determine the cause of a 28,000-acre wildfire outside of Cle Elum, a construction firm has come under scrutiny (14); while Seattle Sounders Football Club will be working with the American Red Cross to provide donations to wildfire survivors in Central Washington (15). University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Living With Fire program will be holding a new summit where homeowners can learn how to defend their homes from wildfires on October 1st at Reno's Grand Sierra Resort and Casino (16). Wildfire activity in Arizona is the focus of the next item (17); followed by an article from New Mexico which takes another look at US Forest Service's plan to snuff every wildfire no matter how small (18). US Forest Service noted an impressive total of over 1,000,000 gallons of retardant dispensed by its Air Attack Base in Boise, Idaho, so far this year (19); the next article taking a closer look at the life of an Idaho firefighter killed in the line of duty this past week (20). As National Weather Service issued a fire weather warning for parts of Utah, several wildfires are still burning (21); but adding insult to injury, Oklahoma residents who lost their homes in recent wildfires will still have to pay property taxes on destroyed structures (22). A letter to the editor expresses profound thanks for efforts by South Dakota's Wildland Fire Division firefighters in controlling raging wildfires in a state which has seen 1,469 fires burn 226,000 acres this year (23); however, the destruction of pastureland in Nebraska by wildfires has forced the Nature Conservancy to sell its herd of buffalo (24). In Hawaii, the Nature Conservancy has installed a camera on the slopes of Mauna Loa volcano as part of a pilot program to help detect wildfires (25); while Prince George Fire Centre announced that a 2,700-hectare wildfire is forcing restricted access to wilderness areas in British Columbia, Canada, until the end of September (26). Air-tankers continued to grapple with a 550-hectare wildfire in southern France (27); and a wildfire on the Greek island of Chios forced evacuations from two villages (28). The scourge of palm oil plantations is being cited as the motivation for numerous wildfires in Thailand (29). Heading to Australia, New South Wales Rural Fire Service firefighters had several blazes to deal with yesterday (30); while Western Australia's Department of Environment and Conservation stated that fuel buildup made thousands of homes indefensible against bushfires (31). And finally, Smokey Bear recounted (with the aid of a translator) his journey to the International Space Station at an event in Massachusetts' Myles Standish State Forest!
