WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 062612

A Christian Science Monitor article revisits the issue of whether federal fire authorities have sufficient airpower to deal with Western wildfires (1); while the interaction between federal, state, and local officials in dealing with wildfires across the West is examined by the next article (2); followed by a New York Times article that takes a look at the phenomenon of forests being transformed into grassland by mega-fires (3). A Los Angeles Times article provides an overview of wildfire activity across the West, where nearly 1.4 million acres have been scorched and blistering heat which feeds the fires shows no sign of weakening any time soon (4); while San Diego County's Intermountain Fire and Rescue Department felt a little overwhelmed when four instructors had to train 200 Mexican firefighters on, among other things, wildland firefighting tactics in Baja California (5); but in Northern California, Plumas National Forest will invoke fire restrictions beginning Sunday (6). As firefighters brought Arizona's 11,950-acre Poco Fire to 65% containment, US Forest Service began withdrawing fire crews (7). Colorado's High Park Fire, which has burned 87,250 acres and destroyed over 250 homes, is now 55% contained (8); and firefighters brought containment on the 45,000-acre last chance fire to 100% in Washington County (9); while structure protection was the order of the day on the Waldo Canyon Fire, which has burned 5,168 acres and is only 5% contained (10); forcing closure of the popular Pikes Peak cog railway tourist attraction (11); and smoke from that blaze grounded aircraft at Pueblo Memorial Airport (12); as a video shows that half the federal air-tanker fleet is now concentrated in that state (13); NASA satellites providing a striking image of the wildfires from space (14); the wildfire danger forcing officials to tighten fire restrictions in the San Luis Valley National Wildlife Refuge Complex and the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve (15); wildfires even causing difficulties for Colorado's primary elections (16); and the 16-hour days are taking their toll on firefighters as well (17). Providential rainfall is helping firefighters gain the upper hand on a wildfire in Sanpete County, Utah (18). A wildfire near Helena, Montana, forced evacuations (19); but fire officials in the Custer National Forest are planning to use prescribed fire and logging to reduce the wildfire danger in the Beartooth Ranger District (20); meanwhile, winds hampered air-tankers trying to fight two other blazes in that state (21). With weather conditions looking more like August than June, fire officials in Wyoming are expecting a busy fire season (22); even as a pair of wildfires broke out in Bridger-Teton National Forest (23). South Dakota's Crow Peak Fire has grown to 100 acres and is currently 25% contained (24); while a column from McPherson County, Kansas, discusses the pros and cons of the forest fires which are ravaging the West (25). Dozens of firefighters are battling a six-acre wildfire in Virginia's Shenandoah National Park (26); and firefighters have brought the 21,000-acre wildfire burning in North Carolina's Croatan National Forest to 90% containment (27). The next article provides a summary of wildfire activity in Ontario, Canada (28); and even though residents of North West River and Sheshatshiu, Labrador, just returned from sm evacuation, they were warned that changing wind directions could prompt another one (29). A pair of arson wildfires broke out near Jerusalem, Israel (30); while dozens of wildfires have cropped up in Russia's Western Siberian Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region (31). A 140-acre wildfire was reported outside of Lawas, Malaysia, on the island of Borneo (32); while another blaze on the island, at Kampong Sungai Mau, Brunei, caused smoky conditions in the village (33). An Australian woman who fraudulently obtained bushfire emergency funds after the 2009 Black Saturday blazes in Victoria has been sentenced to jail (34); but a class-action lawsuit over 2001's Black Christmas bushfire, which broke out in New South Wales' Blue Mountains National Park, has been dismissed (35). And finally, we have the profile of a woman who gets paid to photograph firefighters on the fire line for the National Interagency Fire Center!
