WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 090111

Our first article today takes a closer look at the Veterans Green Corps, a $1.5 million experiment by U.S. Forest Service and California Conservation Corps to put returning war vets to work helping with forest jobs, like battling wildfires (1); while a 223-acre wildfire that burned in northern San Diego County has been estimated to cost $1,441,641 to suppress (2). Fire crews battling a 1,600-acre wildfire in Oregon's Mount Hood wilderness literally wrapped up historic buildings to protect them from the flames (3); but some residents in the area feel that US Forest Service took too long to respond to the wildfire (4). As an 1,800-acre wildfire continues to burn in Okanogan County, Washington, fire officials will conduct a public meeting tonight to discuss their progress (5); while three lightning-sparked wildfires have burned over 2,200 acres in Arizona's Tonto National Forest (6). A pair of eight-year-olds have been charged with starting a 1,200-acre wildfire in Pocatello, Idaho (7); and a 500-acre wildfire blazed across Mountain Home Air Force Base yesterday afternoon (8). A summary of wildfire activity in Utah is up next (9); where firefighters battling a 150-acre blaze outside of Toquerville are using air attack to rope it in (10). As firefighters continued to battle both the heat and wildfires that burned 4,000 acres in northern Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, another day of high temperatures shows little evidence that they will get any relief soon (11); the fires forcing firefighters to use bulldozers to gain the upper hand (12); while families are picking up the pieces from wildfires that blazed through their neighborhoods earlier this week (13); with the Red Cross and Salvation Army doing their part to help (14). Texas Forest Service reported on nine wildfires they were battling across the state (15); including a 500-acre wildfire burning near Addicks Reservoir that continues to be a challenge for firefighters (16); and the 6,200-acre wildfire burning near Possum Kingdom Lake that is still uncontained (17); forcing residents living there to escape by boat (18). A 500-acre wildfire has destroyed one home and several structures in Walker County, Texas (19); and a 200-acre wildfire that destroyed two mobile homes in Wise County forced abandonment of the fire command post due to advancing flames (20). Lightning-sparked wildfires continued to provide challenges for firefighters in Montana (21); but the weather was helping instead of hurting, for a change (22); while overloaded SEATs have sometimes had to dump loads in order to safely lift out of Ravalli County Airport this week (23). An update on wildfires in Wyoming is provided by the next article (24); where wildfire weather keeps the fire danger high (25); and a lightning storm ignited four wildfires outside of Jackson Hole (26). Michigan's Department of Natural Resources is cautioning residents in the north of that state about the wildfire danger over the Labor Day weekend (27); while air-tankers helped Arkansas Forestry Commission firefighters contain a wildfire which destroyed at least one home (28). Nine National Guard helicopters dropped an estimated 50,000 gallons of water on two wildfires burning outside of New Orleans, containing the smaller 26-acre blaze (29). Wildfires in northern Alabama are the focus of a video segment (30); the current situation prompting officials to remind residents of Chilton County about the need for burn permits (31). The wildfire danger in northern Georgia has increased due to extreme drought conditions (32). Prompt action by British Columbia, Canada's, Kelowna Fire Department extinguished a small wildfire before it could grow (33); while wildfire activity in Ontario continues to abate, with only four new starts reported and 41 fires currently active (34). Over 930 mi.² of protected land in 17 Brazilian preserves has burned since June (35). In the Mediterranean Basin, wildfires were reported in Italy and Albania, as well as the North African nations of Tunisia and Algeria (36); Italy providing a pair of CL-415 air-tankers to assist Albania as part of the European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism (37). Australia's National Emergency Warning System, which has been used 7 million times since its unveiling in 2009, is profiled in the next article (38); but unlike many other states, Australia Capital Territory will not be beginning its bushfire season early this year (39). Queensland Fire and Rescue Service firefighters battled a 3,000-acre wildfire burning east of Charleville (40). And finally, for you R/C enthusiasts out there, Russia has just unveiled a new firefighting train, complete with a remote controlled firefighting robot!
