An editorial from the Modesto Bee warned that, in a year that has already seen 9,649 wildfires nationwide (mostly in the Southeast), funding shortfalls could adversely affect wildland firefighting in the Golden State, spawning conflagrations like the ones that led to 43 deaths in Northern California last fall.
