WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 050812

We lead off with something a little different today - a paint additive from a Southern California company that turns ordinary house paint into fire retardant, protecting structures from fire while also increasing their insulation rating (1). An Op-Ed piece from the Los Angeles Times discusses how water depletion from afforestation is causing problems for forested areas across the US (2); while Wildfire NOTD subscriber Rich Brooks, a Reporter for the San Bernardino Press-Enterprise, reported a 28-acre wildfire near Winchester (3); and during a meeting at Santa Maria Airport to discuss a runway extension, Wildfire NOTD subscriber David Baskett's efforts to bring 10 BE-200 air-tankers to the region for firefighting was mentioned (4); while Governor Jerry Brown expounded on Wildfire Awareness Week in a radio segment in Sonora (5); even as the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety offered wildfire safety tips for California homeowners (6); and a video from the California Fire Alliance and the Bureau of Land Management highlighted some things homeowners can do to protect their homes from wildfires (7). Continued drought and high temperatures have forced officials in Arizona to impose fire restrictions (8); and Wildfire NOTD subscriber Dan Ware, Fire Information Officer for New Mexico State Forestry, sent along a press release from the governor about a new e-mail service to help keep people informed on wildfire activity across the state (9). A committee in Colorado's State Senate voted unanimously to exempt wildfire claims from the $600,000 cap put on legal claims against state agencies (10). Fire officials in Austin, Texas, unveiled new preventative measures to be put into place to prevent a catastrophe like last year's wildfires (11); while Texas Forest Service will be providing information on wildfire behavior and land management recommendations at a community wildfire protection meeting in Walker County on June 5th (12). South Dakota Division of Wildland Fire Suppression has completed its investigation of a firefighter's death battling last year's Coal Canyon Fire (13); the next article taking a look at the damage done by a 741-acre wildfire that blazed through Pennsylvania's French Creek State Park (14). Pasco County, Florida, commissioners imposed a burn ban following several wildfires in the area (15); and after lightning ignited nearly a dozen wildfires, fire officials in Volusia and Flagler Counties braced for more (16). A wildfire briefly closed a roadway in Bonfield Township, Ontario, Canada (17); while art imitates life in a new exhibit from Berkshire, UK's, Swinley Forest that touches on the destruction done by wildfires (18). A 14,000-acre mangrove forest is in fire danger in Ca Mau Province, Vietnam (19). An article from Australia explores how the Black Saturday bushfires impacted community care providers (20); while power utility SP AusNet plans to spend $100 million upgrading transmission lines in eastern Victoria to reduce the danger of bushfires (21). As unseasonably warm temperatures continue in South Australia, Country Fire Service is battling a bushfire in Wirrabara Forest (22); but Perth Hills bushfire survivors are arguing with the Western Australian government that they are entitled to the same sort of compensation people who survived the Margaret River and Toodyay fires are getting (23). And finally, firefighters in Alabama are preparing to take on an obstacle course that is "the toughest two minutes in sports"!
