WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 092812

Property Casualty Insurers Association of America reminded homeowners of the need to mitigate property risks from wildfires (1). A 25-acre wildfire broke out near the Southern California community of Tustin yesterday (2); while a court in San Bernardino County issued a death sentence for a convicted arsonist (3); and a camper faces three years in prison for starting a 200-acre wildfire in Sequoia National Forest with fireworks (4); but volunteers are taking part in the League to Save Lake Tahoe's 15th annual Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day (5); while ten wildfires in the Santa Cruz Mountains this past year have been attributed to illegal campers (6). Oregon Department of Forestry expected to have an 18-acre wildfire burning near Eugene contained by Friday night (7); and firefighters announced that a 70-acre wildfire burning in the Columbia Gorge has been contained (8); but a portion of the Rogue River Trail was closed due to wildfire activity (9). Firefighters in Washington state are gaining ground on five major wildfires which have scorched 186 mi.² so far (10); including the Table Mountain Fire, which is 35% contained after burning 38,267 acres (11); people in Eastern Washington complaining about unhealthy air quality due to smoke from the blazes (12); while the Department of Natural Resources reminded visitors to the Cascades that over half of the 992 wildfires started in that state this year have been due to carelessness (13); the Fire Management Officer on the Entiat and Lake Chelan ranger districts discussing his job in the next article (14). Hunters in Colorado may be impacted by forest closures in wildfire areas (15); and although federal wildfire assistance has been approved for Cleveland and Creek counties, Oklahoma, none appears to be forthcoming for Payne and Oklahoma counties (16). Despite dry conditions in Wyoming's Shoshone National Forest, fire restrictions will be lifted Saturday at midnight (17); fire officials reducing the wildfire danger warnings for Grand Teton National Park and Bridger-Teton National Forest as well (18). A letter to the editor in Montana expounds on the virtues of the proposed Bitterroot Valley Natural Resource Policy (19); while Wildfire NOTD subscriber Dan Snyder, President of Neptune Aviation, commented on the addition of a second BAe 146 air-tanker to their fleet in a press release (20). Smoke from a wildfire in Monroe County, Wisconsin, has been blamed for numerous traffic accidents (21). Officials worried that a 60 km² wildfire burning in northeastern British Columbia, Canada, may head towards settlements when the winds pick up (22); current fire conditions prompting the Kamloops Fire Centre to extend the open fire ban (23); followed by a summary of wildfire activity in Ontario (24). An update on the situation in Spain's Canary Islands, where wildfires caused €70 million worth of damage last month, is up next (25); and several structures have been damaged by wind-driven wildfires on the Italian island of Sicily (26). The International Association of Wildland Fire sent along an item about the extension of a deadline for submission of fire safety award nominations, to be presented in Sydney, Australia, October 25-26 (27); even as fire officials across New South Wales braced for what is forecast to be the worst bushfire season in decades (28); while Western Australia's Emergency Services Minister announced that $7 million would be used to protect the Capes region from bushfires (29).
