WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 121412

Oregon Department of Forestry officials complained that after the rash of wildfires this past summer money intended to prevent wildfires has instead been used extinguishing them (1); while a rancher from Elko County, Nevada, reflected on the impact of wildfires on his operation as well as sage grouse habitat (2). Arizona's Prescott National Forest will be hosting a U.S. Forest Service Employment Workshop and Career Expo tomorrow (3); the next article taking a look at business recovery in Fort Collins, Colorado, six months after the High Park Fire blazed through the area (4). Firefighters in Johnson County, Arkansas, responded to a 200-acre wildfire that closed a portion of Highway 103 (5); and the International Association of Wildland Fire sent along an invitation to their upcoming Fourth Fire Behavior and Fuels Conference, which takes place in Raleigh, North Carolina, in February 2013 (6). There was trouble in paradise, as a wildfire near Kapolei, Hawaii, burned 10 acres (7). Helicopters were credited with assisting Australian firefighters in corralling a bushfire along the shores of Queensland's Lake Cooroibah (8); while the contribution of AT802 air-tankers, which helped battle a bushfire outside of Halliford last week, is examined by the next article (9). And finally, a little boy who has had serious health problems got the dream of a lifetime through the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Los Angeles County Fire Department (a press release on the event can be found at this link)!
