A 460-acre wildfire burning south of Tucson, Arizona, has been fully contained (3); but with 200 wildfires already reported this winter, officials in Minnesota fear that a dearth of snow may lead to an abundance of wildfires months earlier than usual (4). Bushfires have ripped through 2,500 ha of forest reserves in the African nation of Ghana (7); and as India heads into its high fire season, a forest fire on the slopes of Doddabetta Peak, near Ooty, was reported (8). On the technology front, Australian phone utility Telstra has unveiled a new high-tech wildfire detection system called "EYEfi" (9); while in the ongoing trial of a man accused of sparking a deadly bushfire during Black Saturday, the accused's father testified (10). Country Fire Service reported a bushfire in South Australia's Adelaide Hills (11). A bushfire which has already burned 15,000 acres near Northcliffe, Western Australia, is expected to double in size before it's contained (12); but the Department of Environment and Conservation indicated that thick smoke which has plagued Perth could persist through Friday (13).
