WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 020413

Chubb Group of Insurance Companies has added evacuation assistance to its Wildfire Defense Services offered to homeowners in 14 western US states (1). The California Fire Science Consortium sent along their February newsletter (2); but the US Forest Service is worried about above-average fire activity in southeastern Arizona unless rain arrives soon (3). Evacuations were performed in Jefferson County, Colorado, yesterday due to a five-acre wildfire in the Hayman Burn Area (4); while the next article discusses rebuilding efforts in Creek County, Oklahoma, six months after the largest wildfire in state history scorched 60,000 acres (5). South Dakota's Yankton Fire Department reflected on a busy 2012 in which grass fires were a major concern (6); and an article from British Columbia, Canada, profiles West Kootenay Regional Airport, which hosts the Southeast Fire Centre & Air Tanker Base (7). St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services firefighters quickly squelched a bushfire that threatened homes in the Caribbean island nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis (8); but with nine northern provinces at risk from bushfires, Thailand is relying on satellites to help with bushfire detection (9). An editorial touches the possibility that Australian insurers may stop offering policies in bushfire-prone areas (10). Back burning operations in Victoria's Alpine National Park aim to help rope in a bushfire that has already burned 6,400 ha on the slopes of Mount Hotham (11); while scientists are trying to determine if an ancient grove of ash trees was wiped out by the Black Saturday bushfires (12). The Newcastle Knights will be doing some public service with a rescue chopper crew to assist relief efforts for bushfire survivors in Coonabarabran, New South Wales (13); and the Tamworth Aero Club will be helping out the Bushfire Appeal Race Meeting as well (14). As South Australia transitions into the worst bushfire danger period of the year, Country Fire Service is urging property owners to finalize cleanup of fuel around their places (15); and a post-op on a bushfire that burned on the grounds of the Ross River Resort in Northern Territory last month is provided by Bushfires NT in the next article (16). A 500-hectare bushfire has damaged property in Esperance on Western Australia's south coast (17); another blaze causing some angst outside of Boddington (18).
