A 20-acre wildfire burned outside the Southern California community of Harbor City on Friday (1); while firefighters have contained a 29,502-acre wildfire in Colusa County which cost over $15 million to suppress (2); but even as firefighters brought a 2,650-acre wildfire in Placer County to 100% containment, a man was charged with using a pyrotechnic device to start the blaze (3); and a small grass fire was also reported on the outskirts of Ukiah (4). As people clean up the mess from the largest wildfire to hit Oregon in 150 years, ranchers and environmentalists are coming up with different factors that could have contributed to the blaze (5). A lightning strike was blamed for a wildfire that broke out in Moffat County, Colorado (6); but a five-acre wildfire outside of Cañon City has been contained (7); while the Colorado-based National Cattlemen’s Beef Association is lobbying Congress to pass the Catastrophic Wildfire Prevention Act of 2012 after what it perceived as "decades of mismanagement of our nation’s public lands [that] have led to the dangerous levels of fuels that have resulted in catastrophic wildfire" (8); while the Senate version of the bill was introduced by Utah's Mike Lee (9); where a trio of wildfires is currently burning (10). Quick work by firefighters outside of Laramie, Wyoming, extinguished a 1-acre blaze in the Medicine Bow National Forest (11); and a fire on the grounds of the National Guard's Camp Guernsey is now 90% contained (12); but a controversial new study out from the University of Wyoming disputes the current premise that wildfires are burning hotter than they have in the past by comparing data leading back as far as the Civil War to current information on forest density (13). Firefighters from Montana's Department of Natural Resources and Conservation continue to grapple with a 40-acre wildfire near Garrison Junction (14). A heavy air-tanker attempting to take off from South Dakota's Rapid City Regional Airport was forced to drop his load on the tarmac due to a sudden loss in engine power (15); while a pair of wildfires burning in the western part of the state are drawing in fire crews from around the region (16). A new satellite map from a data display company in Michigan shows wildfire activity across the US from 2001 to 2012 (17). A dozen new wildfires cropped up in Ontario, Canada, bringing the total to 51 that have scorched 48,225.8 hectares (18); but fire officials fear that a 225-hectare wildfire burning on the grounds of Canadian Forces Base Petawawa may spread to Algonquin Provincial Park (19); the following article providing some additional statistics on wildfires in that province (20); where current fire conditions prompted officials to invoke a total fire ban in Muskoka (21). NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer satellite provides a striking view of the wildfires which ravaged Portugal's Atlantic island of Madeira in the next item (22); followed by a summary of wildfire activity across Italy, where one arsonist who set a dozen fires has been arrested (23). The next article recounts the tense moments as a 2001 bushfire threatened to overwhelm a maritime museum in Jervis Bay, New South Wales, Australia (24). And finally, our last article shows once again that criminals should beware the long arm of the... fire service!
