WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 081309

Some details on the La Brea fire are provided by our first two wildfire stories; while officials are seeking the public's help in determining the cause of this suspicious fire. A summary of wildfires burning in Northern California is up next; followed by information on the Lockheed fire burning in California's Santa Cruz Mountains, which appears to be heading towards the sea, burning everything in its path. The Coffin Fire, in Northern California, has blazed past 1,000 acres in size, while firefighters are heavily involved in a wildfire in Mendocino National Forest as well. A number of small wildfires that sprang up in Southern Oregon were quickly doused this week; and a compendium of wildfires burning in Arizona is up next. Two articles sum up the status of wildfires in New Mexico; followed by an update on a pair of wildfires burning in Utah's Dixie National Forest. Despite more favorable weather conditions, many wildfires continue to burn in British Columbia, Canada, as the next article shows. Consolidation of communications between various fire agencies is likely to be one of the suggestions provided by the Australian Royal Bushfire Commission report due out Monday. A contingent of new firefighting vehicles has been impacted by government penny-pinching in New South Wales; even as landowners in that state are being told to clear up vegetation around dwellings. And finally, a 'watch out' for firefighters battling structure fires: exploding ammunition!
