WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 032713

Wildfire NOTD subscriber Tyler Miller sent along an article which states that Oregon's Klamath Falls Airport control tower, which serves air-tankers during fire season, will not be closed by the FAA after other articles indicated that it would be closed due to sequestration cuts (1); but the Klamath County commissioners got an earful from property owners upset over forest fire protection fees (2). The Central Arizona Wildland Response Team plans to hold wildland fire preparedness drills for local, state and federal agencies in the Tonto National Forest today (3); firefighters from Tucson participating in a drill of their own in Oracle (4). Below-average snowfall in New Mexico's mountains this winter has fire managers worried about the wildfire season ahead (5); the situation not helped by the fact that a serial arsonist appears to be at work on the outskirts of Albuquerque (6). The Water Research Foundation is hosting a Wildfire Readiness and Response Workshop April 4, 2013 in Denver, Colorado, which will address the impact wildfires have on watersheds (7); while the Summit County Wildfire Council has begun taking grant applications to fund fuel reduction projects (8). Nebraska's governor voiced his support for a $1.7 million wildfire-fighting bill making its way through the Legislature (9). Heading to Australia, a dozen properties may have been lost in a 1,300-hectare bushfire that raced through Dereel, Victoria, yesterday, as a 320-hectare wildfire burned between Allambee South and Allambee East (10); a video segment providing some additional information about firefighter injuries on the fireline (11). Although a rainstorm may help firefighters battling a bushfire outside of Rockleigh, South Australia, Country Fire Service warned that shifting winds could make the fire unpredictable (12). And finally, homeschooled kids in Jacksonville, Texas, had a special visitor: Smoky Bear!
