WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 102210

San Diego County officials marked a grim pair of anniversaries for the devastating Southern California wildfires of 2003 and 2007 (1); but Mendocino National Forest has lifted its burn ban, although it is still requiring permits for fires (2). A new, high-volume pump system that can transport water 6 miles from a source (something which could be useful for battling wildfires where no natural water source is nearby) was demonstrated in Berkeley, California, yesterday (3); and fire apparatus manufacturer Pierce has received an order for 32 wildland firetrucks from the Bureau of Land Management for several states in the West (4). US Forest Service has received $1.7 million in Stimulus funds to help with wildfire mitigation in Boulder, Gilpin, Grand and Larimer counties in Colorado (5); and a Colorado credit union is doing its part to help people impacted by two high-profile wildfires in that state by raising $85,000 in donations (6). Although 55,000 acres burned in Montana this year, the Northern Rockies Coordination Center stated that it was a calm fire season (7). A debris fire in Indiana burned out of control to become a 35-acre wildfire (8); and four wildfires were reported in Fulton County, Ohio, as the region suffers through a dry spell that could result in more fires (9). Fire authorities in Kentucky have reported wildfires in Bullitt and Hardin counties (10); while firefighters in Louisiana announced that they now have the 3,800-acre wildfire burning in Kisatchie National Forest 75% contained (11). An out-of-control controlled burn in Tennessee underscored U.S. Drought Mitigation Center's concerns over the continuing drought in that state, as well as in Alabama and Georgia (12); and firefighters in Mississippi have been battling a number of blazes caused by people ignoring a statewide burn ban (13). Georgia Forestry Commission is concerned about dry conditions that could lead to more wildfires in that state (14); the danger emphasized by a wildfire in DeKalb County (15). As Florida continues to suffer through a drought, the next article provides a snapshot of the city of Tampa's predicament (16). A new wildfire was reported in Vila Cova a Coelheira, Portugal (17). Indonesia has dispatched hundreds of firefighters to deal with hotspots all over Sumatra Island (18); but their neighbor across the Malacca Straits, Singapore, is growing impatient with the hazy air they have to breathe (19). With bushfire season officially kicking off November 1st, fire agencies in the Australia Capitol Territory were reminding residents to be prepared (20); while a futuristic house which won an award at the 2010 Building Designers Association Victoria is designed to be very bushfire resistant (21). Victoria's Upper Yarra Bushfire Reference Group met with Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley to discuss the bushfire situation in their area (22); even as New South Wales's Rural Fire Service is advising residents of that state to prepare for the imminent bushfire season in their neck of the woods (23). And finally, a story comes to us from Scotland where a Canadian firefighter owes his life to quick thinking by a wee Scottish lass!
