WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 102910

In Southern California, Verizon Wireless provides some important tips for cell phone users in the event of wildfires as they continue beefing up their system with the infusion of millions of dollars in new equipment (1); while a wildfire on the grounds of Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County burned 150 acres yesterday (2); although CAL FIRE will be demobilizing some of their firefighters in the Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit with the close of fire season November 1st (3). Concerned about debris runoff in areas burned by Colorado's Fourmile Canyon Fire, US Forest Service will be utilizing $1.4 million to help stabilize the area (4); even as thinning operations are underway in Boulder County (5); but with two new wildfires reported in the area, additional funds may be needed in the near future! (6) Texas Forest Service is beefing up its firefighting assets in Southeast Texas in anticipation of heavy wildfire activity (7); and none too soon, as a 50-acre wildfire has been reported in Trinity County (8); one of about 53 fires that have burned 2,759 acres in that part of the state (9). In her continuing series on wildfire-related stories in the New York Times, Wildfire NOTD subscriber Dina Fine Maron of Environment & Energy Publishing delves into the controversial issue of pine bark beetles (10). A wildfire threatening nearby homes was reported in Michigan's Algonac State Park (11); while in Illinois, Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge is taking steps to reduce the chance of destructive wildfires in their area (12). After a good deal of work, Redings Mill Fire Protection District has achieved the distinction of being the first Firewise Community in Missouri (13); but a wildfire that was started by an illegal campfire has spread to 400 acres in Kentucky's Red River Gorge, forcing more trail closures (14). A number of wildfires were reported in southwestern Louisiana, one growing so large that it required an aircraft to map it from above (15); and with the arrival of windy, dry weather, Birmingham and parts of northern Alabama face an increased threat of wildfires (16); while, with rainfall a foot below normal, Brevard County, Florida, is bracing for a bad fire season (17). According to the next article, a new study from NASA shows that wildfires of the past may provide hints on those of the future (18). A wildfire in China's Heilongjiang Province that was started by an out-of-control debris fire was brought back under control by 2,500 firefighters (19). The Victorian Bushfire Business Investment Fund has invested $6.2 million in Australian businesses to help kickstart the economy in areas hard hit by the Black Saturday bushfires (20); but Country Fire Authority is adding a few more names to its list of most-endangered towns (21); and with predictions of bad conditions from the weather service this bushfire season, Country Fire Authority met to try to formulate plans in Melbourne (22). A meeting of fire managers from Victoria, Australia Capital Territory, and New South Wales has also been discussing bushfire issues in New South Wales' Snowy Mountains (23); while Rural Fire Service warned NSW residents about the high bushfire danger due to excessive vegetation growth (24). And finally, lots of firefighters have unusual extrication stories, but the next one from Buckinghamshire, England, probably tops them all!
